Domestic equity indices decline by over 1.5%

Benchmark domestic equity indices declined sharply by over 1.5% today. The Sensex plunged 1,240 points to close at 72,772. The Nifty shed 360 points to settle at 22 thousand 780. In the broader market at the National Stock Exchange, the Midcap 100 index tumbled 1.6%, while the Smallcap 100 index tanked 1.8%. 
 
In the Sensex pack, 29 of the 30 constituent companies logged losses, with Infosys emerging as the lone gainer, rising 0.2%. Among the top underperformers, Larsen and Toubro slumped 2.8%, PowerGrid declined 2.6%, and Adani Ports fell 2.4%.
 
In the sectoral indices on the BSE, all 28 sectors edged lower. Among the top laggards, 
 
PSU Banks skidded 3.2%, Power, Telecommunication, and Utilities lost 2.3% each and Mid-Small Private Banks dropped 2.2%.
 
The overall market breadth at the BSE was negative, as shares of 3218 companies declined, 1271 advanced and 228 remained unchanged.
