Former Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu today inaugurated 25 new Atal Canteens in the National Capital from Timarpur on the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. With this, the number of Atal Canteens in Delhi has reached one hundred. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Delhi Government Minister Ashish Sood were also present on the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Naidu said, the launch of these canteens is a highly commendable initiative aimed at providing affordable and nutritious food to the poor, people living in slums, workers and those coming to Delhi from different parts of the country in search of employment.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the resolve to establish 100 Atal Canteens carries forward the spirit of Antyodaya and public service associated with Atal Bihari Vajpayee. She added that the canteen launched in the university area will provide affordable and nutritious food to needy students.
Under this scheme, nutritious food will be provided every day at just five rupees to around one lakh workers, needy people, daily wage labourers and other people belonging to low-income groups. Since the launch of the Atal Canteens on 25th December last year, around 95 lakh subsidized meals have so far been provided to the public, and the canteens have the capacity to provide more than three and a half crore meals in a year.
