Delhi Police arrest nine in organised cyber fraud network

Delhi Police have busted an organised cyber fraud network and arrested nine people in connection with a series of cybercrime cases. The accused were operating from Meerut, Ghaziabad and Jaipur.

Briefing media in New Delhi today, DCP Central Rohit Rajbir Singh said that around 19 complaints registered on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) have so far been linked to the network. The complaints originated from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Odisha, among other states.

The total amount involved in the linked cases is estimated at around 65 lakh rupees. Police said the gang operated through a three-level division of labour. One group allegedly stole mobile phones and devices, while another group was involved in arranging bank accounts. A Jaipur-based team, comprising technically skilled members, allegedly transferred and siphoned off the fraudulently obtained money through multiple accounts.

During raids, Delhi Police recovered four laptops, two tablets, around 52 mobile phones, 70 debit cards, 145 SIM cards, six Point-of-Sale machines, 13 bank passbooks and four lakh rupees in cash. Police said the investigation has also revealed that the accused allegedly possessed several merchant IDs, which were used to obtain Point-of-Sale machines from banks.

The machines were allegedly used to facilitate the withdrawal and liquidation of the fraud proceeds. Delhi Police suspect that the accused were using specialised software to access bank accounts and conduct transactions without using the SIM cards. The technical aspect is being investigated further.
