Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu today chaired a meeting with principals of women’s colleges of Delhi University to review the safety and security of students around college campuses and transit routes.
Senior officers of Delhi Police, Transport Department, Public Works Department (PWD), Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and Delhi Metro were also present during the meeting. The most common concerns outlined by the Principals and others were unsafe last-mile connectivity, e-rickshaws, encroached footpaths, unregulated vending, dark spots, inadequate lighting, unsafe parks near campuses, public toilets near campuses, obscene flashing, requirement of more Pink Booths and patrolling.
On the occasion, Mr Sandhu directed directed the PWD and MCD to strengthen the street lighting, CCTV coverage, police patrolling and PCR deployment around colleges, along with dedicated Nodal Police Officers for each college. He also directed the Transport Department to improve last-mile connectivity and regulate e-rickshaws, while the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) was asked to clear encroachments and vulnerable spots. A student safety application and an Inter-College Women Safety Committee were also proposed, with progress to be reviewed every fortnight. Mr Sndhu emphasized that instilling a sense of security and trust amongst students are the primary aims of the Delhi Government.
