Delhi High Court upholds temporary restriction on Telegram ahead of NEET-UG re-examination

The Delhi High Court has upheld the Centre’s decision to temporarily restrict access to the Telegram messaging platform ahead of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination on June 21, saying the move was not disproportionate and complied with the law. Delivering the verdict, Justice Tejas Karia said the government had followed the procedure laid down under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act and that the blocking order was supported by sufficient reasons.

Telegram had challenged the order, alleging discriminatory treatment and arguing that it had already removed hundreds of links related to unlawful NEET content and cooperated with authorities. The restriction, issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on the recommendation of the National Testing Agency, will remain in force until June 22. On May 12, the National Testing Agency (NTA) had cancelled the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (Undergraduate), or NEET-UG, held on May 3 for medical admissions amid allegations of paper leak.
