Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that India has emerged not merely as a major economy but as a nation confident in its civilisational heritage, culture and capabilities. Addressing the 11th Convocation Ceremony of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University in Lucknow, Shri Singh said that when India speaks today, the world listens. The Defence Minister said that the biggest transformation in New India is that the country is no longer merely following global rules but is also contributing to rule-making.

The Defence Minister said that national pride in language, culture and civilisation enhances a nation’s self-reliance and progress. He said that India is in a better position and that the government is focused on making India stronger in all ways—economically, mentally and culturally.

Mr Singh also said that universities should have the purpose of nation-building beyond degree distribution. He said that educational institutions must nurture young people with a passion for nation-building and a commitment to the ideals of justice, equality, liberty and fraternity.

Shri Singh also highlighted improvements in the quality, accessibility and affordability of education in India over the last 12 years. He added that expenditure on research and development has doubled and that a new National Education Policy has been implemented after 34 years. Shri Singh said these changes have motivated Indian youth to create many startups, unicorns and advanced technologies.

Speaking to reporters in Lucknow, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also said that India is concerned about the crisis situation in Nepal. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stated that India is ready to provide all the assistance needed by Nepal. The Defence Minister added that India has been continuously sending assistance to the neighbouring country.
