A deep depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal has triggered widespread torrential rainfall across Odisha, disrupting normal life and raising concerns over flash floods and inundation. Several districts have recorded exceptionally heavy precipitation, with low-lying areas submerged and transport services affected. The State Government has intensified rescue and relief preparedness as the India Meteorological Department continues to maintain high-level weather alerts including red alert for few districts.

 

A depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression, unleashing incessant and intense rainfall across large parts of Odisha. Extremely heavy precipitation has been reported from Jagatsinghpur, Sambalpur, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Puri and Khordha districts, resulting in widespread waterlogging and disruption of normal life.

 

In Bhadrak district, flood-like conditions have been reported in seven Gram Panchayats. Rising waters of the Mahanadi River have inundated the premises of the historic Bhattarika Temple in Cuttack district, while Subarnapur district has witnessed extensive damage to standing paddy, vegetable crops and rural infrastructure.

 

Meanwhile, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari has convened a high-level review meeting to assess the evolving situation and strengthen preparedness and relief measures. The India Meteorological Department has warned of continued heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, with the possibility of flash floods in vulnerable areas.
