Congo: Death toll from Ebola surpasses 2k mark

The death toll from Congo’s Ebola outbreak has surpassed two thousand mark. According to government data released last night, the outbreak has so far recorded, 4,381 confirmed cases, including 2.011 deaths, while 704 patients remain in admission and isolation facilities. Health authorities are struggling to reach remote areas affected by the outbreak because of rebel conflict, poor road conditions and work stoppages linked to payment disputes. The outbreak is also unusual because the rare Bundibugyo virus responsible for it currently has no approved vaccines or treatments.  The Ebola outbreak is already become the second-largest in history, only behind the 2014-2016 West Africa outbreak that recorded more than 28,000 cases, including over 11,000 deaths
