Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant has said that the justice system should not wait for people to seek help, but should reach out to those in need. He said many victims are unaware of their legal rights and often do not know where to seek assistance.
Justice Surya Kant was speaking after inaugurating the country’s first Victims Rights Centre in Patna. The Chief Justice said the centre will work as a victim-centric case management system, helping victims access their legal rights at different stages of their cases.
He said timelines will be fixed for various steps, with progress recorded and reviewed regularly.
The new centre aims to ensure that victims receive not only justice, but also the necessary support throughout the legal process. Set up at the Bihar State Legal Services Authority campus, the centre will provide legal aid, psychological support and counselling to crime victims under one roof.
A Transgender Helpline was also launched on the occasion, while multi-utility vehicles to take legal aid services to people were flagged off.
