China: Death toll rises to 16 in rain-triggered landslides in Jiangxi Province

In southeastern China, the death toll rose to 16 after searchers found another body from rain-triggered landslides in Jiangxi province, media reports said today.

The deaths occurred across three towns in Suichuan county, where days of heavy rain followed by Typhoon Saudel’s landfall along China’s east coast. A mudslide in Gaoping town killed 13 people, while two died in Zuo’an and one in Tanghu. More than 18,000 people were evacuated from Suichuan county. Two additional deaths were reported in neighbouring Hunan province following heavy rains linked to the typhoon. Saudel made landfall twice in Zhejiang province on August 28 and again as a tropical storm in Fujian province on September 3.
