Centre to construct over 26 thousand kilometres of rural roads in financial year 2026-27

Centre will construct over 26 thousand kilometres of rural roads in the financial year 2026-27. According to the Ministry of Rural Development, more than 18 thousand nine hundred crore rupees has been earmarked for the construction of rural roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and related rural connectivity initiatives.

A high-level review meeting was held to assess the progress of rural road connectivity projects. The meeting was chaired by Rohit Kansal, Secretary, Department of Rural Development. Senior officials from several states, including Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and others, participated in the meeting.

The Secretary laid special emphasis on providing last-mile connectivity to all remaining unconnected habitations. States have been directed to expedite work on pending projects under PMGSY and PM-JANMAN, with particular focus on habitations of Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups.

Progress under the Road Connectivity Project for Left-Wing Extremism-affected Areas was also reviewed. States have been asked to ensure the timely completion of sanctioned roads in these sensitive regions.

The meeting stressed the importance of quality construction and proper maintenance of rural roads. States were urged to strengthen field inspections and ensure full use of the e-MARG platform for real-time monitoring and maintenance of roads.
