Centre assures adequate availability of urea in Punjab through continuous monitoring

The Centre has assured adequate availability of urea in Punjab for the Kharif 2026 season, stating that there is no shortage of the fertilizer in the state.
According to official sources, continuous monitoring is being maintained to ensure availability of adequate fertilizer stocks in the state. Official data shows that the Department of Fertilizers (DoF) has maintained a healthy and surplus supply chain for Punjab. Against the state’s total Kharif 2026 requirement of 14.50 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) and a pro-rata requirement of 9.0 LMT up to 9th of June, the Department of Fertilizers has ensured the availability of 10.71 LMT of urea. Of this, actual sales in the state have been 6.25 LMT, leaving a substantial closing stock of 4.46 LMT readily available.
In addition, 39,167 metric tonnes of urea are currently in transit to Punjab. According to state government records, paddy transplantation has not yet fully commenced, making the existing stocks sufficient to meet the anticipated demand.
While the Central Government remains committed to ensuring adequate bulk supplies of urea to the states, it has emphasized that the responsibility for smooth and equitable retail distribution rests with the state governments. States have been advised to strengthen inter-district and intra-district supply mechanisms to prevent localized shortages and ensure timely availability to farmers.
