Pacific island nation of Hawaii is facing strong winds and torrential rain as Category One Hurricane Lala moves across the Big Island. Lala has maximum sustained winds of around 120 kilometres per hour. Forecasters warn of up to 63 centimetres of rain, raising the risk of flash floods and mudslides.

 

A hurricane warning is in effect for the Big Island. Tropical storm warnings cover Maui County, Oahu, Kauai and Ni’ihau. Officials have urged residents to remain indoors and avoid travelling. The National Hurricane Centre said Lala’s eyewall was reaching the southern Big Island. The storm is expected to move west across the island chain later today.

 

Power outages have affected thousands of people on the island. Shelters have been opened, while officials warn of dangerous flooding, falling trees and strong winds. The storm could mark the Big Island’s first direct hurricane strike in more than 150 years.
