Calcutta HC Denies Abhishek Banerjee Permission to Travel Abroad for Eye Treatment

The Calcutta High Court has denied permission to Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee to travel abroad for eye treatment. Justice Sougata Bhattacharya noted that Mr. Banerjee had earlier been asked to first consult specialists at Kolkata’s S.S.K.M. Medical College and Hospital. Since his counsel informed the court that he would not do so, the judge rejected the plea and dismissed the case.

Banerjee had earlier approached the Supreme Court, which referred the matter back to the High Court for a decision within seven days. During today’s hearing, Abhishek Banerjee counsel argued that he had previously been allowed to travel abroad in an Enforcement Directorate case. The state opposed the plea, citing ongoing cases against him and concerns that the investigations could be affected.
