Time for our segment Dateline India, in which we take a look at the developments taking place at the national or global level. Today, we will talk about:-INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PLAY AND FIFA WORLD CUP.

Today we’re celebrating something that brings smiles, energy, and happiness to people of all ages-the International Day of Play!

Absolutely! In fact, the International Day of Play, observed on 11th June, was established to remind us that play is not just entertainment-it’s essential for healthy growth, learning, and well-being.

You know, when we hear the word “play,” many of us immediately think of children. But honestly, who says adults can’t play too?

But play is much more than just having a good time. Research shows that play helps children develop important life skills.

Play also boosts creativity and imagination. Think about it-some of the best ideas start when people are curious, experimenting, and exploring.

Spend at least 15 minutes today in uninterrupted play with a child.

Because every playful moment is also a learning moment.

Because when we play, we learn.

When we play, we connect.

And football fans! The wait is finally over! The world’s biggest football celebration is here, and the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off tonight!

The opening match takes place at the legendary Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, where the hosts Mexico face South Africa in a thrilling Group A encounter!

Exactly! And here’s a fun fact-this fixture is giving football fans a serious sense of déjà vu.

Listeners, let’s put you on the spot!

Who do you think will win tonight-Mexico or South Africa?

Will it be one of the traditional giants? Or are we about to witness a surprise champion?

That’s the magic of the World Cup! Every tournament gives us unforgettable goals, dramatic upsets, last-minute winners, and stories that live forever in football history.

This edition of the World Cup will be the biggest in history, with an expansion from 32 to 48 teams. A record 104 matches will be played with 72 in the group stage and 32 in the knockout rounds, across host nations United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The three host nations qualified automatically, while 45 teams earned their places through a demanding two-year qualification journey. The competition features 12 groups of four teams each. The top two teams from every group, along with the eight best third-placed teams, will advance to the Round of 32. . This expands the knockout stage to 32 teams for the first time in tournament history. The grand final is scheduled for 19th of July, promising a thrilling conclusion to football’s greatest celebration.

This World Cup is also expected to be one of the most challenging in history, with teams facing demanding conditions across three countries – including long travel distances, varying climates, different altitudes, and shifting time zones.

Over the decades, only eight nations have lifted the FIFA World Cup trophy – Brazil, Italy, Germany, Spain, Argentina, England, France, and Uruguay, the inaugural champions. Among the most unfortunate sides in World Cup history remain the Netherlands, who have reached three finals but are yet to win the title despite producing generations of world-class talent.

From history to high stakes, from legends to new challengers – the stage is set for football’s ultimate battle. Shagun Chopra from Sports desk.

So grab your jerseys, get your snacks ready, and prepare for sleepless nights packed with football action!

Because the road to World Cup glory begins tonight!
Let the games begin! Let the football fever take over!

ITANAGAR
Tawang district in Arunachal Pradesh has heightened preparedness for a possible Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) in the Mago Chu basin after climate risk warnings from scientific experts.

The Tawang district disaster management department (DDMA) issued an alert based on inputs from the Centre for Earth Science and Himalayan Studies. It flagged possible Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) risks tied to rapid glacier retreat and unstable terrain around Khangri Glacier. The advisory was shared with the Indian Army, ITBP, and Border Roads Organisation for coordinated response.

GLOFs are major Himalayan climate threats, occurring when natural barriers fail and release large water volumes downstream rapidly, causing widespread destruction.

Thingbu Assistant Commissioner Thutan Wangchu, with Mago villagers, inspected Khangri Glacier, locally known as Neh-Goh Gangri. At over 17,000 feet on the Gorichen range’s western edge, it shows notable snow and ice loss. Locals said the once snow-cloaked range has thinned under rising temperatures and changing climate.

Officials then examined Neh-Goh Tso, a glacial lake at 15,000 feet below the glacier and flagged as a potential GLOF source. For now, its water sits well below the moraine dam. Outflow into Mago Chu exceeds glacial melt inflow, easing immediate pressure. The lake’s outlet rests on solid rock, limiting erosion risk. Wide valleys above Merathang, Jethang, and Mago could also absorb any surge before it hits settlements.

Officials warned geological changes could raise risk quickly. The report recommended detailed studies of glacier retreat, lake depth, water volume, inflow-outflow, and moraine dam stability.

Tawang Deputy Commissioner and DDMA Chairman Namgyal Angmo urged residents to stay vigilant and follow advisories. SP Tasi Darang advised people along the Mago Chu and Tawang Chu rivers, especially in low-lying areas, to keep emergency supplies ready.

DEATH
Chhabi Biswas (Chabi Biśbās; 13 July 1900 – 11 June 1962) was an Indian actor, primarily known for his performances in Tapan Sinha’s Kabuliwala and Satyajit Ray’s films Jalsaghar (The Music Room, 1958), Devi (The Goddess, 1960) and Kanchenjungha (1962).

He is best remembered for his numerous roles as the quintessential aristocratic patriarch, and was himself the scion of a rich and cultured North Kolkata family.

In 1936, Biswas made his cinematic debut in a film called Annapurnar Mandir. The film was directed by Tinkari Chakraborty and Biswas played the role of Bishu, the husband of the heroine. Trained in the over-melodramatic acting style of the contemporary Bengali stage, Biswas soon grasped the finer nuances of acting for cinema. He became a regular in films produced by the New Theatres and had major roles in Chokker Bali (1937), Nimai Sannyas (1940) and Pratisruti (1941). He was absolutely marvellous as a 90-year-old ascetic in Debaki Bose’s film Nartaki (1940). Ironically, it was the success of his acting in Nartaki that limited his opportunities in lead roles but his reputation as a character actor par excellence was by now firmly in place. Biswas’s second innings as an actor began with this film and he almost became an automatic choice as the paterfamilias or the suave noble. Using his perfect English diction to the hilt Biswas (along with Pahadi Sanyal and Bikash Roy to a certain extent) developed a unique way of delivering a dramatic dialogue, first in English, and then after a pause repeating the same in Bengali. Films such as Ashok (1942), Parineeta (1942), Dwanda (1943), Matir Ghar (1944), Dui Purush (1945), Biraj Bou (1946) and Mandana (1950) showcased his talents as an actor of great quality.

In 1958, when Satyajit Ray needed someone to play an aging aristocrat in Jalsaghar, Biswas was an automatic choice. Subsequently, Biswas starred in two more Ray films; Devi (1960) and Kanchenjungha (1962).
Chhabi Biswas died at age 61 in an automobile accident on 11 June 1962. Satyajit Ray later wrote, “Jalsgahar, Devi, Kanchenjunga, were all written with Chhabi Biswas in mind. Ever since he died, I have not written a single middle-aged part that calls for a high degree of professional talent.”
