The recognition of Everest as the highest mountain came in the mid-19th century. In 1856, the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India established its height and named it Peak XV. Later, in 1865, this peak was officially named Mount Everest in honor of Sir George Everest, a former Surveyor General of India. This discovery marked a significant milestone in the field of geography and exploration.

International Day of UN Peacekeepers
Today is also another very important global observance – the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, commemorated every year on the 29th of May.
यह दिन उन बहादुर पुरुषों और महिलाओं को सम्मानित करने के लिए मनाया जाता है, जिन्होंने दुनिया भर में शांति बनाए रखने के प्रयासों के दौरान अपनी जान गंवा दी… और साथ ही उन सभी को श्रद्धांजलि देने के लिए भी, जो साहस, समर्पण और पेशेवर दक्षता के साथ संयुक्त राष्ट्र के शांति अभियानों में अपनी सेवाएँ जारी रखे हुए हैं।
The International Day of UN Peacekeepers was established by the United Nations General Assembly on 29th May. The first UN peacekeeping force, the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation, began operations in the Middle East on this date in the year of 1948.
“शांति स्थापना का भविष्य” विषय के तहत मनाया जा रहा इस वर्ष का अंतर्राष्ट्रीय यूएन पीसकीपर्स दिवस, पिछले लगभग आठ दशकों में सैन्य, पुलिस और नागरिक शांति रक्षकों द्वारा दिए गए अमूल्य योगदान पर प्रकाश डालता है। यह अपनेआप में एक अधिक समतापूर्ण, न्यायसंगत और टिकाऊ दुनिया के निर्माण की दिशा में प्रगति और सामूहिक प्रयासों की भावना को समाहित करता है।
Today, more than 68,000 civilians, military, and police personnel serve in 11 UN peacekeeping missions, confronting increasingly complex and interconnected challenges shaped by a shifting geopolitical landscape. Despite the challenges, peacekeepers remain steadfast in their pursuit of peace.
यह अंतर्राष्ट्रीय दिवस शांति रक्षकों की अटूट सेवा और बलिदान के साथ-साथ इस कार्य में सहयोग देने वाले समुदायों के जुझारूपन को भी श्रद्धांजलि देने का भी अवसर है। इसके अलावा, यह उन चार हजार चार सौ से अधिक शांति सैनिकों को भी पूरी श्रद्धा के साथ सम्मानित करता है, जिन्होंने शांति के लिए अपने प्राणों की आहुति दी है। शांति-स्थापना के इस महत्वपूर्ण कार्य में वर्ष 2024 में ही 57 सैनिकों ने अपने प्राणों का उत्सर्ग किया।

And here’s something interesting – peacekeepers come from many different countries around the world, working together under the United Nations flag. It’s truly a global effort for peace.

Two Indian peacekeepers will be honoured posthumously by the United Nations for their ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty on the International Day of UN Peacekeepers. Lance Havildar Harbhajan Singh, who served with the United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in Congo, and Naib Subedar Sujit Kumar Pradhan, who was deployed with the UN Mission in South Sudan, will be posthumously honoured by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres with the prestigious Dag Hammarskjold Medal for their sacrifice in the line of duty. Additionally, Mr. Guterres will present the 2025 Military Gender Advocate of the Year award to Major Abhilasha Barak of India, who serves on the UN Interim Force in Lebanon, honouring her outreach efforts with women and girls during her deployment in the West Asian nation.

Today’s edition of ‘Parikrama’ highlights the remarkable achievements of two daughters of Jharkhand who have made the entire nation proud through their dedication, discipline and academic excellence. More from our correspondent:
In the recently declared CBSE and ISC Class 12 examination results, two meritorious students from Jharkhand secured the top rank at the national level and created history. First, let us talk about Shambhavi Tiwari from Jamshedpur. A Bioscience student of Sacred Heart Convent School, Jamshedpur, Shambhavi scored a perfect 100 percent in the ISC Class 12 examination to emerge as a national topper. Staying completely away from social media and maintaining a focused routine, she now aspires to become a doctor and serve the underprivileged sections of society.
The celebrations were not limited to Jamshedpur alone, as Ranchi too witnessed a proud moment. Bhavya Ranjan, an Arts student of Oxford Public School, Ranchi, secured 499 out of 500 marks in the CBSE Class 12 examination. With an outstanding score of 99.8 percent, Bhavya became a national topper and now dreams of joining the civil services to contribute towards nation-building and public service.
Shambhavi and Bhavya have emerged as inspiring role models for students across the country. Their achievements reaffirm that sincerity, determination and hard work can turn even the biggest dreams into reality. For ‘Parikrama’, this is Mahvish Rahman from Ranchi.

महाराष्ट्र के कोल्हापूर जिले में आपदा प्रबंधन मदद हेतु पहिली बार ट्रान्सजेंडर्स का एक दल प्रशिक्षित किया जा रहा है. मॉन्सून के मद्देनजर तैय्यार हो रही यह टीम शायद देश में अपनी किस्म की पहली टीम होगी. जिला प्रशासन को उम्मीद है की यह दल किसी भी आपत्ती के प्रसंग में मदद के लिए कारगर साबित होगा. हमारे पुणे संवाददाता की यह रिपोर्ट.
इस टीम में 10 ट्रांसजेंडर सदस्य शामिल हैं, जिनमें मुख्य रूप से ‘मैत्री’ संगठन की मयूरी अलवेकर, शिवानी गजबर, ज़ोया दिन्नी आदि शामिल हैं. इन सभी को राजाराम झील में डिज़ास्टर मैनेजमेंट सेल द्वारा थ्योरेटिकल और प्रैक्टिकल ट्रेनिंग दी गई है. उन्हें मोटर बोट चलाना, डूबते हुए व्यक्ति को सुरक्षित बाहर निकालना, प्रभावित व्यक्ति को होश में लाना और फर्स्ट एड देना सिखाया गया है. जिला कलेक्टर डॉक्टर विजय राठौड़ और जिला आपदा प्रबंधन अधिकारी डॉक्टर प्रसाद संकपाळ के मार्गदर्शन में देश स्तर पर यह अपनी तरह का पहला ऐसा नवीनतम प्रयोग है. जिला आपदा प्रबंधन के हिस्से के रूप में उनकी टीम बनाई गई है और इस टीम की ट्रेनिंग अभी चल रही है. जिला आपदा प्रबंधन अधिकारी प्रसाद सपकाळ ने कहा कि यह देश में ट्रांसजेंडर्स की पहली ऐसी टीम है. कोल्हापुर जिला प्रशासन ने डिज़ास्टर मैनेजमेंट के लिए लगभग 2500 युवाओं की एक टीम तैयार की है. इनमें 500 से ज़्यादा युवतियां हैं. ये जवान लड़के-लड़कियां बाढ़, तूफान, हादसा और अलग-अलग आपदाओं या ज़रूरत के दूसरे हालात में मदद के लिए आते हैं. यह टीम बिना किसी मानदेय या तनखा के काम कर रही है. अब कोल्हापुर में इस काम के लिए ट्रांसजेंडर्स की एक टीम भी तैयार की गई है. प्रसाद सपकाळ ने कहा कि ट्रेनिंग पूरी होने के बाद यह टीम काम करने लगेगी. कोल्हापुर जिलाधिकारी डॉक्टर विजय राठौड़ ने बताया की मानसून से पहले की तैयारियों के तहत, वॉलंटियर्स को मुश्किल समय में बचाव का काम करने की ट्रेनिंग दिया जा रहा हैं. कोल्हापुर ज़िले में बड़ी संख्या में वॉलंटियर्स हैं. इसमें सभी हिस्सा ले रहे हैं. इसी तरह, पहली बार दस ट्रांसजेंडर्स की एक टीम को ट्रेनिंग दि जा रहा हैं. उन्हें चार से पांच दिन की ट्रेनिंग दी जाएगी। किसी भी आपदा में वे राहत के काम में सक्रिय रूप से शामिल होंगे. यह प्रशासन की मदद करने वाली पहली ऐसी टीम है. और उन्होंने किसी भी आपदा की स्थिति में मदद करने का पक्का इरादा कर लिया है. परिक्रमा के लिए, मनोज क्षीरसागर, पुणे.

The Central Government has announced major railway infrastructure initiatives for Andhra Pradesh, including the commencement of operations of the South Coastal Railway Zone from 1st of next month. A report :
The new railway zone, headquartered at Visakhapatnam, will begin functioning from June 1st. The Government of India has already issued the Gazette Notification for the South Coastal Railway Zone, fulfilling a long-pending demand of the state. Speaking at an event in Visakhapatnam recently, Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the new railway zone will strengthen railway administration and improve railway services in Andhra Pradesh. He said the Centre has allocated a record railway budget of more than ten thousand crore rupees to the state. Railway projects worth nearly one lakh six thousand crore rupees are currently under implementation to improve connectivity to ports, tourism centres and major cities.
As part of railway modernization, 74 railway stations in Andhra Pradesh are being redeveloped with improved passenger facilities. Several flyovers, underpasses and railway tracks have already been completed, while many more infrastructure projects are under progress. The East Coast Railway Corridor is also being upgraded into a four-line network to enhance passenger and cargo movement. The Railways Minister said these initiatives are aimed at strengthening railway infrastructure and supporting economic growth in Andhra Pradesh. Remembering the legendary actor and theatre artist, Prithviraj Kapoor, on his death anniversary. Prithviraj Kapoor was a pioneer of Indian theatre and of the Hindi film industry, who started his career as an actor, in the silent era of Hindi cinema, associated with IPTA as one of its founding members and who founded the Prithvi Theatres, a travelling theatre company based in Mumbai, in 1944.The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan in 1969 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1971 for his contributions towards Indian cinema.In 1954, he was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, and in 1969, the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India.
वर्ष 1930 में बीपी मिश्रा की फ़िल्म ‘सिनेमा गर्ल’ में उन्होंने अभिनय किया। वर्ष 1933 में प्रदर्शित फ़िल्म ‘राज रानी’ और वर्ष 1934 में देवकी बोस की फ़िल्म ‘सीता’ की कामयाबी के बाद बतौर अभिनेता पृथ्वीराज अपनी पहचान बनाने में सफल हो गए। इसके बाद पृथ्वीराज ने न्यू थिएटर की निर्मित कई फ़िल्मों में अभिनय किया। इन फ़िल्मों में ‘मंजिल’ 1936 और ‘प्रेसिडेंट’ 1937 जैसी फ़िल्में शामिल हैं। वर्ष 1937 में प्रदर्शित फ़िल्म विद्यापति में पृथ्वीराज के अभिनय को दर्शकों ने काफ़ी सराहा। वर्ष 1941 में सोहराब मोदी की फ़िल्म सिकंदर की सफलता के बाद पृथ्वीराज कामयाबी के शिखर पर जा पहुंचे।
पृथ्वीराज को देश के सर्वोच्च फ़िल्म सम्मान दादा साहब फाल्के के अलावा पद्म भूषण तथा कई अन्य पुरस्कारों से भी नवाजा गया।

पंकज कपूर फिल्मी सफर संघर्ष, जुनून और अभिनय के प्रति दीवानगी की मिसाल माना जाता भारतीय सिनेमा, टेलीविजन और थिएटर के उन दिग्गज अभिनेताओं में से एक हैं, जिन्होंने कभी ग्लैमर की चकाचौंध नहीं, बल्कि अपने गहराई भरे चरित्र अभिनय से दर्शकों का दिल जीता. इंजीनियरिंग की पढ़ाई छोड़कर अभिनय के जुनून को अपनाने वाले इस अभिनेता ने न सिर्फ समांतर सिनेमा और मेनस्ट्रीम फिल्मों के बीच पुल का काम किया, बल्कि टेलीविजन पर भी आम आदमी की आवाज बने।
थिएटर से शुरुआत करने वाले पंकज कपूर ने टीवी और फिल्मों दोनों में अपनी अलग पहचान बनाई. दूरदर्शन पर 80 के दशक में प्रसारित जासूसी धारावाहिक करमचंद में निभाई शीर्षक भूमिका शायद उनकी सबसे मशहूर भूमिकाओं में से हैं। उनकी सराहनीय फ़िल्मों में एक डॉक्टर की मौत (1991) तथा विशाल भारद्वाज निर्देशित “मक़बूल” (2003) शामिल हैं। आस्कर अवार्ड विजेता रिचर्ड अटेनबरो निर्देशित और 1982 में निर्मित फ़िल्म गाँधी में पंकज ने प्यारेलाल की संक्षिप्त भूमिका अदा की।
