Jaggery or as we lovingly call it- gur- has always held a special place in Indian homes. Isn’t it? A small piece of jaggery after a meal or Grandmothers adding it to winter laddoos, or the aroma of gur melting into homemade sweets during diwali or holi or any other festive season. These are moments many Indians have grown up with.

Absolutely. Nearly 2.5 million livelihoods in India are connected to jaggery production & the most interesting thing is that- at a time when people across the world are becoming more health conscious, many are slowly turning away from heavily refined sugar and looking for natural alternatives. And suddenly, jaggery- something Indian households have trusted for centuries is gaining global attention.
पिछले एक दशक में भारतीय गुड़ का निर्यात दोगुने से भी ज़्यादा हो गया है। अमेरिका, इंडोनेशिया, UAE, नाइजीरिया और नेपाल जैसे देश भारतीय गुड़ का आयात बढ़ती मात्रा में कर रहे हैं। तो आखिर गुड़ में ऐसी क्या खासियत है? रिफाइंड चीनी के विपरीत, गुड़ बिना किसी भारी केमिकल प्रोसेसिंग के बनाया जाता है। गन्ने के रस को धीरे–धीरे उबाला और गाढ़ा किया जाता है, जिससे इसमें मौजूद कई प्राकृतिक खनिज और सूक्ष्म पोषक तत्व सुरक्षित रहते हैं। और यही वजह है कि बहुत से लोग इसे “औषधीय चीनी” कहते हैं।
In many Indian homes, gur was never seen as only a sweet treat. A child returning from school might receive it with roasted chana, while labourers often ate it during winter mornings for sustained energy. These customs reflected generations of practical wisdom and experience. Jaggery contains iron, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and several micronutrients that are mostly lost when white sugar is heavily refined. In fact, iron-rich jaggery has long been used in many homes to help improve haemoglobin levels.

सदियों से आयुर्वेद गुड़ को पाचन, श्वसन संबंधी समस्याओं से राहत और शरीर की सफाई करने वाले गुणों से जोड़ता आया है। अब आधुनिक उपभोक्ता उस पारंपरिक ज्ञान को फिर से खोज रहे हैं जो पहले से ही ज्ञात था।
But the story of jaggery becomes even more fascinating when we look at its roots. Did you know the word “sugar” itself comes from the Sanskrit word sarkara? India’s connection with sugarcane and jaggery goes back thousands of years, all the way to the Vedic period. Historical accounts even mention that in 647 AD, a Chinese mission travelled to India to learn sugar-processing techniques.
तो कई मायनों में हम कह सकते हैं कि गुड़ सिर्फ़ एक खाने की चीज़ नहीं है। यह भारत की सभ्यतागत यादों का एक हिस्सा है। और आज, यह पुरानी परंपरा एक आधुनिक ग्रामीण उद्यम का रूप ले रही है। तमिलनाडु के एक किसान, मुरलीधरन का ही उदाहरण ले लीजिए। आम गन्ने को बेचने के बजाय, उन्होंने ऑर्गेनिक गुड़ का पाउडर बनाना शुरू कर दिया। धीरे–धीरे, इसकी माँग बढ़ने लगी। उनका बनाया हुआ प्रोडक्ट आस–पास के राज्यों और यहाँ तक कि विदेशों के बाज़ारों तक भी पहुँचने लगा। आखिर क्या बदला? वैल्यू एडिशन। उनका ऑर्गेनिक गुड़, आम गुड़ के मुकाबले कहीं ज़्यादा ऊँचे दाम पर बिकता है, जिससे उनके परिवार और उनके साथ काम करने वालों के लिए कमाई के बेहतर मौके पैदा होते हैं।
One thoughtful shift transformed a traditional activity into a profitable business. And this is exactly where government initiatives are stepping in. Schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana, PM Formalization of Micro Food Processing Enterprises Scheme, and One District One Product are helping strengthen food-processing infrastructure, support small enterprises, and improve branding and marketing. Thousands of jaggery-based micro food processing units have already received support. Because when rural products receive better technology, better packaging, and better market access, entire local economies begin to grow.
और इस कहानी का एक और भी खूबसूरत पहलू है। तमिलनाडु के पोषण कार्यक्रमों में, बच्चों और परिवारों को दिए जाने वाले सप्लीमेंट्री फ़ूड मिक्स में गुड़ को भी शामिल किया जा रहा है। क्यों? क्योंकि पोषण का मतलब सिर्फ़ पेट भरना ही नहीं है। इसका मतलब है ज़िंदगी को पोषित करना। और कभी–कभी, पारंपरिक खाद्य पदार्थों में ठीक वैसी ही पोषण संबंधी समझ छिपी होती है, जिसे आज के आधुनिक सिस्टम फिर से बनाने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं।
Even India’s GI-tagged jaggery varieties tell stories of regional pride. Kolhapur jaggery from Maharashtra is known for its golden colour and sweetness and Muzaffarnagar gur from Uttar Pradesh has strong export demand.
केरलम का ‘मरायूर गुड़’ अपनी शुद्धता और बनाने के पारंपरिक तरीकों के लिए मशहूर है। हर इलाका इसमें अपना एक खास स्वाद, बनावट और पहचान जोड़ देता है। इसलिए, अगली बार जब हम खाने के साथ गुड़ का कोई छोटा–सा टुकड़ा देखें, तो यह हमें याद दिला सकता है कि इसकी मिठास के पीछे उससे कहीं ज़्यादा कुछ छिपा है, जितना हम अक्सर समझ पाते हैं।

Mormugao Port Authority recorded strong growth during the financial year 2025–26, with increases in dry bulk, miscellaneous cargo and fertilizer handling. Operational efficiency also improved, with reduced turnaround time and higher ship berth output.
The port posted its best financial performance in five years, recording an operating income of nearly five hundred and ninety-three crore rupees and an operating surplus of over two hundred and eighty-five crore rupees.

TIRUCHIRAPALLI
The water resources department in the delta region of Tamil Nadu aims to complete desilting work by this month end. More from our correspondent::
A race against time in the Cauvery delta region as water management officials push to wrap up a massive, one-hundred-crore-rupee infrastructure project ahead of the monsoon season. The Water Resources Department reports it has successfully completed nearly eighty percent of its special desilting work across twelve districts in the Tiruchi region. The ambitious project, which kicked off well ahead of schedule back in March, covers a massive four-thousand-nine-hundred-and-seventy-two kilometers of canals
and rivers. Out of nearly nine-hundred-and-sixty individual projects sanctioned, over seven hundred and sixty are already wrapped up.
The department is firmly on track to finish the remaining sections by the end of May, with only a minor spillover expected into the first week of June if necessary. To cross the finish line, officials have recently doubled the number of heavy machines deployed on the ground, focusing heavily on notorious choke points that have historically caused severe waterlogging. Thanjavur district is receiving the lion's share of the funding, with over twenty-
seven crore rupees allocated for three-hundred-and-ten individual projects. Tiruvarur follows with seventeen-point-four crore rupees, while Tiruchi district is already boasting a ninety-five percent completion rate on its fifteen-crore-rupee allocation. Department sources note that the recent Assembly elections actually helped streamline the operation. With local politicians preoccupied with campaigns and District Collectors tied up with election duties, the department deployed dedicated Superintending Engineers to oversee the work. This allowed engineers to execute the
dredging systematically and entirely free from political interference.
For local farmers, the relief is two-fold. While the Water Resources Department is tackling the major primary and secondary channels, the Agriculture Engineering Department has stepped in to clear out the smaller, crucial branch channels. In Tiruvarur alone, an extra three-hundred and fifty kilometers of these localized farm channels are being cleared to ensure irrigation water reaches the fields smoothly. Officials say the ninety-day head start has paid off, resulting in highly systematic work and virtually zero public complaints this season. National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) has launched Summer Camps across 17 villages in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh from 20th of this month to 15th of the next month. The Ministry of Steel said that this unique grassroots initiative is designed to nurture children from the tribal communities. It highlighted that the initiative is expected to engage around 1 thousand 07 hundred children during their summer vacations in experiential learning, creativity and sports. The Ministry said as the activities have commenced in most villages, mobilisation efforts to enhance batch strength are underway.

The Ministry of Panchayati Raj has announced the winners of the National Panchayat Awards 2025, with Andhra Pradesh securing five national awards under the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar and Nanaji Deshmukh Sarvottam Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar categories. Among the award-winning Panchayats, Chemmullapalli Gram Panchayat in Kadapa district received the second prize in the Poverty-Free and Enhanced Livelihoods category along with a cash award of seventy-five lakh rupees. The Panchayat earned recognition for achieving full food security coverage, providing tap water connections to all households, ensuring complete housing coverage, irrigation facilities for all cultivable land and extending financial support to self-help groups.
In Prakasam district, Gundamala Gram Panchayat secured the joint third prize in the Self-Sufficient Infrastructure category and received fifty lakh rupees. The Panchayat was honoured for developing strong infrastructure, achieving one hundred percent household tap water connections, improving sanitation facilities and strengthening digital governance services for villagers.
Srungavaram Gram Panchayat in Visakhapatnam district won the first prize in the Panchayat with Good Governance category and received one crore rupees. The award recognised the Panchayat’s efficient delivery of citizen services, regular conduct of Gram Sabha meetings and active participation of women’s self-help groups in local administration.
Bokkasam Palem Gram Panchayat in Tirupati district received the first prize in the Women-Friendly Panchayat category. The Panchayat was appreciated for ensuring women’s safety, promoting girl child education, achieving zero maternal and neonatal deaths, and encouraging strong women-led self-help group activities.
Meanwhile, Kuppam Block Panchayat in Chittoor district secured third place in the Best Block Panchayat category and received an award of one crore fifty lakh rupees.

Meghalaya
Farmers and local food producers of Meghalaya gathered yesterday at the fifth edition of Farmers’ Market held in Shillong. Fresh organic produce, indigenous ingredients, and traditional food products drew urban residents and tourists to the event in the capital city. The day-long event featured stalls selling local vegetables, fruits, spices, wild honey, pickled bamboo shoots, millets, and other locally sourced products.

Its also the birthday of Bob Dylan, an American singer-songwriter. Described as one of the greatest songwriters of all time, Dylan has been a major figure in popular culture over his 69-year career. With an estimated 125 million records sold worldwide, he is one of the best-selling musicians. Dylan added increasingly sophisticated lyrical techniques to the folk music of the early 1960s, infusing it “with the intellectualism of classic literature and poetry”. His lyrics incorporated political, social, and philosophical influences, defying pop music conventions and appealing to the burgeoning counterculture.
Dylan’s accolades include an Academy Award and ten Grammy Awards. He was honored with Kennedy Center Honors in 1997 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012. Dylan has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He was awarded a Pulitzer Prize special citation in 2008, and the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”.

आज माउंट एवरेस्ट पर चढ़ने वाली प्रथम भारतीय महिला बछेंद्री पाल का जन्मदिन है। बछेंद्री पाल ने 23 मई 1984 को विश्व की सबसे ऊँची चोटी माउंट एवरेस्ट पर सफलतापूर्वक चढ़ाई कर इतिहास रचा। इस उपलब्धि के साथ वे एवरेस्ट फतह करने वाली पहली भारतीय महिला बनीं। उनकी इस सफलता ने देश की अनेक महिलाओं और युवाओं को साहसिक खेलों के लिए प्रेरित किया।
उन्होंने कई पर्वतारोहण अभियानों का नेतृत्व भी किया और युवाओं को साहसिक गतिविधियों के लिए प्रशिक्षण दिया। पर्वतारोहण के क्षेत्र में उनके योगदान के लिए उन्हें पद्मश्री, अर्जुन पुरस्कार और राष्ट्रीय साहसिक पुरस्कार सहित अनेक सम्मानों से सम्मानित किया गया।
