President Droupadi Murmu today conferred the National Florence Nightingale Awards 2026 to fifteen Nursing professionals at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The award has been given for their outstanding contribution in the field of nursing. These prestigious awards are presented to Registered Nurses, Midwives, Auxiliary Nurse Midwives, and Lady Health Visitors serving across Central and State Governments, Union Territories, and voluntary organisations. Each award includes a Certificate of Merit, a cash prize of one lakh rupees and a medal symbolising the nation’s gratitude for the invaluable service rendered by these health warriors.

Many patients remember the smile of a nurse long after they recover. A reassuring voice saying “You’ll be alright” can give strength to someone battling illness. Nursing is not only a profession – it is a commitment to humanity. Friends, the COVID-19 pandemic showed the world the extraordinary courage of healthcare workers. While cities fell silent and people stayed indoors, nurses stepped forward fearlessly. They worked long hours in protective equipment, stayed away from families, and risked their own health to save others.

Akashvani is celebrating its 90th anniversary on the 8th of June this year. In connection with the nationwide celebrations, Akashvani Kozhikode, which is completing seventy-five glorious years of service on 14th may 2026, has organised a mini literary festival titled “Legacy 2026”.
The three-day literary fest began at the station studio with the participation of eminent personalities from the fields of literature, poetry, cinema and music. Well-known writer, poet and orator Prof. Kalpatta Narayanan inaugurated the festival. Speaking on the occasion, he said that the bliss of human life lies in the age of audibility and listening. He described radio as the greatest medium of the human voice and communication.
Prof. Kalpatta Narayanan fondly remembered the immense contributions made by legendary literary personalities who were associated with Akashvani Kozhikode. He recalled that Jnanpith award-winning poet Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri had served as a broadcaster at the station and enriched listeners through his powerful literature. He also remembered the contributions of renowned poet N. N. Kakkad, celebrated writer and drama producer Thikkodiyan, noted novelist Uroob and famous drama artist Khan Kavil. Their voices and creative works, he said, had left a lasting influence on generations of listeners across Kerala.
The inaugural session was attended by writers, artists, radio professionals and listeners. Speakers highlighted the unique role played by Akashvani in promoting literature, culture and social awareness through decades of meaningful broadcasting. They also noted that radio continues to remain close to the hearts of people despite the growth of modern digital media platforms.
The three-day festival will conclude on Thursday. Special sessions on literature and cinema, poetry and music are being organised tomorrow with the participation of eminent personalities from the respective fields. Cultural interactions and discussions on the evolution of broadcasting are also part of the celebrations.

ITANAGAR
The Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies (CESHS), in collaboration with the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) and North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST), has successfully completed the 5th Khangri Glacier Expedition in the transboundary Mago Chu Basin of Tawang district, Arunachal Pradesh — a critical headwater region of the larger Brahmaputra Basin system.
The scientific expedition commenced on 4th May 2026 with the objective of undertaking detailed glacier health assessments, cryospheric monitoring, and climate-linked hazard investigations in the eastern Himalayan region.
One of the major observations during the expedition was the development of a significant Glacier Sinking Zone within the study area, where the glacier snout is rapidly collapsing and creating unstable terrain conditions. The team noted that such geomorphological instability could substantially increase downstream vulnerability and landscape hazards in the Mago Chu Basin.
Another major concern identified was the emergence of a potentially dangerous proglacial lake at an elevation of nearly 16,500 feet. The newly formed lake poses a potential Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) threat to downstream regions of the Mago Chu Basin, with possible transboundary cascading impacts on vulnerable communities, ecosystems, and river systems.
Although the region experienced comparatively healthy winter snow accumulation this year, the expedition findings indicate that glacier melting continues at a critically high rate due to persistent climate variability and rising atmospheric temperatures across the eastern Himalayas.
To strengthen long-term glacier monitoring and cryosphere research, the expedition team successfully installed five new scientific monitoring stakes at elevations reaching nearly 17,000 feet using a steam ice-core drilling system integrated with precise Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) technology. These installations will support continued glacier mass balance assessments and surface velocity monitoring in the coming years.
The team also retrieved valuable datasets from the existing Automatic Weather Station (AWS) and Automatic Water Level Recorder (AWLR), including calibration and maintenance of both monitoring systems to ensure uninterrupted high-altitude environmental observations. The collected datasets will contribute towards understanding extreme weather dynamics, hydrological responses, and glacier-linked climate interactions in the region.
In addition, moraine sediments and glacier meltwater samples were collected from the glacier snout for detailed laboratory investigations and geochemical analysis.

धनंजय कीर
हिन्दी साहित्यकार धनंजय कीर की आज पुण्यतिथि है। साहित्य एवं शिक्षा के क्षेत्र में उन्हें सन 1971 में पद्म भूषण से सम्मानित किया गया था। बाबा साहब डॉ. भीमराव आम्बेडकर भारतीय इतिहास की धारा को मोड़कर रख देने वाले महानायक थे। ऐसे महापुरुष पर अनेकों किताबों का लिखा जाना स्वाभाविक है। इन किताबों में एक पुस्तक ऐसी है जो अपने आप में ही इतिहास बन चुकी है। यह पुस्तक बाबा साहब की जीवनी है, जिसके लेखक थे धनंजय कीर। शायद ही कोई अंबेडकरप्रेमी होगा, जिसने इस किताब को न पढ़ा हो। जिन्होंने इसे नहीं पढ़ा, उन्होंने भी इसका नाम तो सुना ही होगा।
बाबा साहब के अलावा धनंजय कीर ने बाल गंगाधर तिलक, ज्योतिबा फुले, राजर्षि शाहू महाराज और महात्मा गांधी की जीवनियां भी लिखी। उन्होंने अपनी आत्मकथा भी लिखी है जो कि मराठी में ‘कृतज्ञ मी कृतार्थ मी’ नाम से छपी है।

अलकनन्दा देवी
कत्थक नृत्यांगना अलकनन्दा देवी ने आज ही के दिन दुनिया को अलविदा कहा। वह प्रसिद्ध कत्थक नृत्यांगना सितारा देवी की बड़ी बहन थीं। अलकनंदा देवी का ताल्लुक वाराणसी से था। हालांकि उनके बारे में अधिक जानकारी उपलब्ध नहीं है। अलकनंदा जी ने फिल्मों में भी काम किया था। शंकर भट्ट की फिल्म ‘सूर्य कुमारी’ में हीरोइन थी। सोहराब मोदी की फिल्म ‘हुमायूँ’ में नृत्य किया था। महबूब भट्ट की भी एक फिल्म में काम किया था, नाम याद नहीं आ रहा । सोहराब मोदी और भट्ट साहब के काम लेने के तरीके से मैं बहुत संतुष्ट थी।
