World Red Cross Day
World Red Cross Day is celebrated to honor the essence of humanity and acknowledge those individuals, especially Red Cross volunteers, who contribute to their communities and continue to save lives worldwide.The idea for World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day came about after the First World War, when an “annual action that could take hold in the whole world… that would be a major contribution to peace” was discussed at the 14th International Conference of the Red Cross. 8 May was eventually chosen because it is the anniversary of the birth of the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Henry Dunant.The first ‘International Red Cross Day’, as it used to be known, was celebrated on 8 May 1948. The official title of the day changed over time and became known as ‘World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day’ in 1984.

The main aim of the Red Cross Society is basically to inspire, initiate and encourage all kinds of humanitarian activities under all times and circumstances. Programmes conducted by the Red Cross Society can be broadly categorised into four parts including the promotion of humanitarian principles and values; disaster response; disaster preparedness; and health and care. The Red Cross Society is based on 7 principles namely, humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary, unity and universality.

Comprehensive guidelines on Prevention and Control of Hemoglobinopathies in India- Thalassemia & Sickle cell Disease and other variant Hemoglobins have been shared to assist the States and UTs for management of Haemoglobinopathies including Thalassemia. The guidelines detail the strategies for management of Thalassemia disease including Thalassemia major (Blood transfusion therapy with packed red blood cell, iron chelation for iron overload, monitoring and management of complication and psychological support etc.) and non-transfusion dependent Thalassemia.
स्वास्थ्य मंत्रालय, कोल इंडिया लिमिटेड (CIL) के सहयोग से ‘थैलेसीमिया बाल सेवा योजना’ (TBSY) लागू कर रहा है। इस योजना के तहत, पात्र मरीज़ों को बोन मैरो ट्रांसप्लांट (BMT) के लिए CIL के कॉर्पोरेट सोशल रिस्पॉन्सिबिलिटी (CSR) फंड से 10 लाख रुपये तक की वित्तीय सहायता दी जाती है। यह योजना देश भर में फैले 17 सूचीबद्ध अस्पतालों में BMT की सुविधा उपलब्ध कराती है।
थैलेसिमिया छुआछूत या फैलने वाली बीमारी नहीं है, बल्कि माता-पिता से बच्चों में डिफेक्टिव जीन के जरिए आती है। दुनिया भर में लाखों लोग इस बीमारी से जूझ रहे हैं, फिर भी इसे लेकर जागरूकता की भारी कमी है। तो आकाशवाणी के इस मंच से हम आपसे आग्रह करना चाहते हैं कि इस बिमारी के मरीजों के साथ भेद-भाव से बचें और जिस भी स्तर पर मुमकिन हो इन्हें समाज में शामिल करें।

It will also bring this engineering approach into global scientific and environmental discussions, supporting its integration into contemporary transdisciplinary knowledge cooperation.
The Lepcha community holds a deep cultural and spiritual connection to nature. Their bridge-building practices reflect indigenous communities’ needs and understanding of diverse environments and structural mechanics. Led by skilled community members who transmit knowledge orally across generations, these practices reflect careful stewardship of natural resources and harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
The resilience of these structures was notably demonstrated during the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) of October 2023, when several cane bridges withstood the impact of the event and continued to provide critical connectivity to remote areas.

सोमनाथ मंदिर का इतिहास केवल पत्थरों का ढांचा नहीं, बल्कि भारत की उस सभ्यतागत अजेयता का प्रमाण है जो बार-बार के विनाश के बाद भी अपनी आस्था की शक्ति से फिर खड़ी हुई। इस नवनिर्माण की नींव आजादी के तुरंत बाद रखी गई थी। 12 नवंबर 1947, दीपावली का वह ऐतिहासिक दिन था जब लौह पुरुष सरदार वल्लभभाई पटेल ने सोमनाथ के खंडहरों का दौरा किया और समुद्र के किनारे हाथ में जल लेकर इस भव्य मंदिर के पुनर्निर्माण का अटूट संकल्प लिया। सरदार पटेल का मानना था कि सोमनाथ की बहाली केवल एक मंदिर का निर्माण नहीं, बल्कि भारत के खोए हुए सांस्कृतिक आत्मविश्वास की वापसी है। जन-भागीदारी और राष्ट्रीय संकल्प से ‘कैलाश महामेरु प्रसाद’ शैली में निर्मित यह मंदिर आखिरकार 11 मई 1951 को तत्कालीन राष्ट्रपति डॉ. राजेंद्र प्रसाद की उपस्थिति में राष्ट्र को समर्पित किया गया।
आज 75 वर्षों के बाद, जब भारत अपना ‘अमृत काल’ मना रहा है, सोमनाथ फिर से एक नए स्वर्ण युग में प्रवेश कर रहा है। आगामी 11 मई को प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी की उपस्थिति में आयोजित होने वाला ‘स्वाभिमान पर्व’ इसी विरासत और विकास के समन्वय का उत्सव है। इस विशेष अवसर पर देश के कोने-कोने से श्रद्धालु प्रभास पाटन पहुँच रहे हैं। दिल्ली से आए तीर्थयात्रियों का दल यहाँ की अत्याधुनिक व्यवस्थाओं को देखकर अभिभूत है। दिल्ली से आए श्रद्धालु कपिल कुमार ने सोमनाथ महादेव के दर्शन और यहाँ के दिव्य वातावरण पर अपनी प्रसन्नता कुछ इस तरह व्यक्त की।

Commuters and tourists in Goa may soon trade road traffic for river breezes as the state advances its ambitious water metro project. Following a detailed feasibility study, officials are preparing to seek central assistance to transform the coastal state’s aquatic transit landscape. A Report::
River Navigation Minister Subhash Phal Dessai has announced that the state government aims to procure approximately 87 vessels to operationalize a comprehensive Water Metro system across Goa. This decision follows a high-level meeting between Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant and experts from the Kochi Water Metro team. To ensure swift implementation, the state government plans to coordinate with Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, within the coming week. The project is the result of a year-long study by the Kochi team, which involved surveying 111 kilometers of Goa’s waterways to determine the most viable routes.
The identified network includes critical stretches such as Panaji to Narva, Betim to Old Goa, Vasco to Cortalim, and Panaji to Chapora. There are also ongoing considerations for extending the sea route from Chapora to Keri and Tiracol. Currently, water transport in Goa serves about 45,000 passengers daily, but officials estimate this figure will surge to over one lakh once the Water Metro is fully functional. Minister Phal Dessai emphasized that this central-state collaboration will not only provide a durable and sustainable public transport system for residents but also serve as a major landmark attraction for the state’s tourism industry. The Karnataka State Mango Development and Marketing Corporation Managing Director T R Vedamurthy has informed that Mango and Jackfruit Mela to be held in Bengaluru at Cubbon Park and Lalbagh will provide consumers an opportunity to buy naturally ripened, carbide free fruits directly from farmers. There are 50 stalls for the mango growers and seven for the jackfruit growers to display and sell their produce. Badami, Mallika, Sindura, Rasapuri, Kari Eshad and Chalti mango varieties and Jackfruit varieties of Rudrakshi, Shivarathri, Ekadashi and Toobagere Lalbagh Madhura varieties will be available for purchase at the mela. The farmers from Ramanagara, Mandya, Tumkur and Uttara Kannada will participate in the mela. The GI tagged Kari Ishad mango from Uttara Kannada district will be an added attraction.
