Buddha Jayanti
Buddha Purnima is being celebrated today.It is the most sacred festival for Buddhists worldwide, commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and passing (Mahaparinirvana) of Gautama Buddha. Observed on the full moon day of the Vaisakha month, it is a day of reflection, compassion, and peace. It is believed that all three major milestones in Siddhartha Gautama’s life-birth in Lumbini, enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, and death in Kushinagar-occurred on the same full moon day. It serves as a time to reflect on Buddha’s teachings of peace, non-violence, and harmony. It highlights the importance of kindness and the potential for enlightenment in everyone.

On the auspicious occasion of Buddha Purnima, Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the Sacred Holy Relics Exposition of Tathagata Buddha at Jivatsal in Leh today. Extending wishes to the people of Ladakh on Buddha Purnima, Mr Shah highlighted that after 75 years, these sacred relics have come to Ladakh. The Home Minister said, Lord Buddha’s wisdom is relevant even 2500 years after him. He said that this is not just a religious event but a historic reunion. Mr Shah expressed confidence that not only the followers of Lord Buddha from Ladakh and Kargil, but followers of other faiths as well, will receive energy from the sacred relics of Lord Buddha.
This is the first time that these sacred relics have been taken out from their permanent location for an exhibition within the country. The sacred exposition of the Holy Relics of Tathagata Buddha is being organised in Ladakh from today till 14th May. A report from our correspondent:
”The first ever international Exposition of sacred Lord Buddha Relic from May 1 to 14 will be historical spiritual confluence in the Himalayan belt of the country as it is expected to be attended by Ambassadors of Buddhist Countries, Scholars, pilgrims, tourists, Chief Ministers and Cabinet Ministers. During the Sacred Exposition, a series of events for the promotion of peace and harmony, such a interfaith dialogue, seminar on Himalayan Buddhism, Yoga and Meditation, Grand Prayer session with thousands of Buddhists Monks for world peace, workshop on Thangka Painting,woodcarving, manuscript preservation, Clay Scriptures and Cultural program of different states and countries will take places at key locations of Leh city. The specific date of 1st of May was chosen to commemorate the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago. In that year, there was a general strike for the eight-hour workday. This movement was a significant step towards ensuring human rights and promoting inner peace among the working class.

In many countries, Labour Day is a national holiday. Several events and seminars are organised on this day to highlight the achievements and contributions of workers. In some places, rallies are held while posters and banners are used to raise awareness about the workers and their rights. Today, Labour Day stands for workers’ rights, fair wages, safe conditions and dignity of labour. It also reminds us of past struggles that led to rights like regulated working hours and labour laws.

In a major push to modernize urban transport in Nagaland, Dimapur – the state’s commercial capital – has taken a significant step with the inauguration of a centralized traffic monitoring centre. The facility is designed to strengthen overall road safety as well as curb air pollution, and strengthen crime detection. A report: –
“The centralized traffic monitoring centre has been set up at East Police Station in Dimapur. As part of the initiative, 14 CCTV cameras along with Automatic Number Plate Recognition systems have been installed at key congestion points. These advanced systems will enable real-time traffic management and support enforcement efforts. Inaugurating the centre, Commissioner of Police Aotula T Imchen said the project will help ensure smoother movement of vehicles and reduce air pollution caused by traffic build-up.
Deputy Commissioner Tinojongshi Chang noted that the new monitoring centre will play a key role in enhancing both traffic management and law enforcement.
The initiative is funded by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change under the National Clean Air Programme, or NCAP. Beyond improving air quality, it is also expected to boost crime detection and strengthen policing capabilities. The three-day Purumentache Fest 2026 will be held from May 1 to 3 at the Multiplex Courtyard in Panaji. In a significant boost to ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ ambitions in the energy storage sector, Eveready Industries India Limited commissioned India’s only operating alkaline battery manufacturing facility in Samba district of Jammu division. The state-of-the-art Greenfield unit, set up with an investment of approximately Rs. 200 crores, was recently inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, in the presence of Mohit Burman, Promoter and Non-Executive Director of Eveready Industries India Limited.
“Lieutenant Governor Manoj said with an investment of Rs. 200 crore, this plant will create local jobs, boost ancillary units, generate opportunities for women and youth, and make a significant contribution to the economic growth of Jammu & Kashmir. The facility has an annual installed alkaline production capacity of 456 million units and a peak production capacity of 360 million batteries per year. The plant will help reduce India’s import dependence on high-performance batteries, enhance supply chain resilience, and improve margin efficiencies. Eveready, which commands over 52 per cent market share in the domestic dry cell battery segment, said the new plant will generate over 500 direct and indirect employment opportunities in the Jammu region at full scale. The company also plans to use the facility for white labeling and to serve export markets. This marks a significant milestone not just for Eveready, but for the country’s evolving energy landscape. CEO of Eveready Industries India Ltd, Anirban Banerjee said as consumer demand shifts towards high-performance, power-intensive devices, the need for advanced battery technologies has never been greater. The industrial transformation of Jammu Kashmir after the New Industrial Policy was launched in 2021, in the financial year 2025-26 alone, Jammu Kashmir attracted investment of Rs. 5 thousand 824 crore which is more than 13 times the average investment recorded before 2021. Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has emerged as world’s largest real-time payments platform, anchoring India’s digital economy. A decade after its launch, UPI has transformed from a fledgling digital experiment into the world’s largest real-time payments platform, powering nearly half of global instant payment transactions and redefining how India pays. Launched on April 11, 2016, UPI today stands as the backbone of India’s digital economy – driving financial inclusion, enabling seamless commerce and setting global benchmarks in digital public infrastructure. The numbers behind UPI’s rise are staggering. From just 373 transactions in its first month, the platform processed around 24 thousand 162 crore transactions in Financial Year 2025-26, marking an extraordinary 12,000-fold increase in volume. Daily usage has also scaled dramatically, with UPI now handling around 66 crore transactions per day, amounting to a daily value of nearly 0.86 lakh crore rupees. UPI today accounts for 85% of India’s digital payment volume, reflecting its deep integration into everyday life – from street vendors and small merchants to large enterprises and government services.
