The Economic Survey 2025-26 highlighted that employment-focused skilling initiatives help bridge skill gaps while improving productivity and expanding opportunities for decent work. Such initiatives also promote social mobility by enabling upward economic advancement, thereby supporting more equitable access to inclusive labour markets.
Focusing on the potential of young population and realising the importance of skilling ecosystem, the Union Budget 2026-27 positions skill development as a cross-sectoral priority. It is noteworthy that the recent interventions and initiatives reflect a sustained policy commitment to ensuring that India’s young population is not just large in number, but prepared and empowered to contribute meaningfully to the country’s economic future.

A skilled and educated population is key to realising India’s demographic potential. The Union Budget 2026-27 provides further impetus to the education sector with a total allocation of ₹1.39 lakh crore. This represents an increase of 8.27% over the Budget Estimates of 2025-26. The allocation focuses on expanding access, strengthening infrastructure, and making education more aligned with industry needs.

The growing healthcare needs of India’s population shaped by demographic shifts, rising non-communicable diseases, and global demand for skilled professionals, point to the need for a skilled and expanded healthcare workforce. In this regard, the Budget sets out a phased outlay of ₹980 crore over three years with an aim to expand and strengthen education of allied and healthcare professionals.Key initiatives in the Budget include: Creation and upgradation of Institutes, Upgradation of existing Allied Health Professionals Institutions,Formation of a strong care ecosystem and a scheme to promote medical tourism services to support States in establishing five Regional Medical Hubs in partnership with the private sector.

In November 2011, UNESCO proclaimed 30 April as International Jazz Day recognising jazz as a force for dialogue, diversity and peace. The story of jazz is written into the quest for human dignity, democracy and civil rights. It has given strength to the struggle against discrimination and racism. International Jazz Day will celebrate its 15th anniversary in more than 190 countries around the world. Goa has announced the upcoming release of its Draft Artificial Intelligence Policy, aimed at positioning the state as a hub for responsible AI and applied innovation. Information Technology Minister Rohan Khaunte made the announcement at a press conference in Panaji on Wednesday, accompanied by officials, academia and industry representatives. “The draft policy will be published on May 4 on the state portal and IT Department website for 15 days of public consultation. The policy focuses on sectors such as Health Tech, Agri Tech and Fin Tech, while emphasizing safety, accountability and ethical AI development. Key targets include AI certification for all IT and technical graduates by 2028, AI exposure in schools from Class 6, and training 50,000 skilled professionals by 2030, with at least 20 percent participation from women and youth. The government is also developing a Konkani Large Language Model with Bhashini, while proposing safeguards for children on social media platforms and measures to address deepfakes and harmful content. Manipur is a land where many brave martyrs were born, whose courage and sacrifices continue to inspire generations. In remembrance of their valour, the state solemnly observed Khongjom Day which is noted annually on April 23, paying rich tributes to the heroes of the Battle of Khongjom. The day marks the Battle of Khongjom, fought on April 23 during Anglo-Manipur War 1891, which represented the final major resistance of the Manipuri kingdom against British imperialism. “In Manipur, the State level Khongjom Day was observed on 23rd of April, 2026 at the Khongjom War Memorial Khebaching, Khongjom in Thoubal district paying rich tributes to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the motherland- Manipur during Anglo- Manipur War 1891. The observation was attended by the Governor of Manipur Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Deputy CM Losii Dikho, ministers, MLAs, top civil and police officers and general public. Addressing the gathering, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla said that Khongjom Day is not only a day of remembrance but also of reflection. He emphasised the importance of unity, self respect and resilience in the face of challenge. He noted that the sacrifices of the forefathers serves as a reminder that freedom and peace must be protected and upheld with responsibility. Shri Bhalla said:
The observation commenced with Sankirtana followed by rendition of the National Song, National Anthem by Manipur Rifles Band. Khongjom Parva and a drama on the life of Manipur warrior Paona Brajabashi was also staged as part of the observation.
Conclusion: Khongjom Day once again brought the people of Manipur together in remembrance and respect for their heroes. The observance not only honoured the sacrifices of the past but also strengthened the collective resolve to preserve unity, peace, and the proud legacy of the state. “पुणे के युवाओं में नशीले पदार्थों के सेवन की प्रवृत्ति लगातार बढ़ रही है। इस संदर्भ में ताराचंद रामनाथ सेवा ट्रस्ट और ज्ञानप्रबोधिनी इन दो संस्थाओं ने हाल ही में शहर में एक सर्वेक्षण किया है। इसके आधार पर ‘संयम’ नामक शहरव्यापी रिपोर्ट भी प्रकाशित की गई है। रिपोर्ट में कहा गया है कि युवाओं में नशे के प्रति जागरूकता होने के बावजूद वास्तविक रूप से इसके सेवन का स्तर चिंताजनक है। मित्रों के समूह और ऑनलाइन माध्यमों के जरिए संपर्क, साथ ही लापरवाही के कारण नशे की लत का खतरा बढ़ रहा है। इस समस्या पर नियंत्रण पाने के लिए पुणे में ‘ड्रग मुक्त प्रभाग’ अभियान चलाया जाएगा। इस बारे में अधिक जानकारी देते हुए पुणे के पुलिस आयुक्त अमितेश कुमार ने कहा–

A man of artistic brilliance, visionary thinking, and cultural patriotism, Dadasaheb Phalke’s contribution to the Indian film industry laid the very foundation upon which Indian cinema stands tall today.Born on April 30, 1870, in Maharashtra, Phalke was a multifaceted genius — a painter, photographer, stage playwright, and a magician — before venturing into filmmaking. He turned to cinema at a time when the medium was still in its infancy globally, and virtually non-existent in India. His ambition? To create an indigenous motion picture industry that could reflect Indian stories, myths, and values to the masses.
भारतीय सिनेमा के पितामह दादा साहब फाल्के ने जब भारत की पहली फीचर फ़िल्म बनाने के लिए तैयारी की, तो फ़िल्म की नायिका उनके लिए गंभीर समस्या बन गई। सन् 1913 में बनी फ़िल्म ‘राजा हरिश्चंद्र’ में ‘तारामती’ की विशेष भूमिका थी। फाल्के की इच्छा थी कि नायिका की भूमिका कोई युवती ही करे। इसके लिए पहले उन्होंने नाटक मंडली से जुड़ी अभिनेत्रियों से बात की, लेकिन आश्चर्य की बात तो यह है कि कोई कैमरे के सामने आने को तैयार नहीं हुई। हारकर दादा साहब ने फैसला किया कि किसी पुरुष से ही तारामती की भूमिका कराई जाए। उन्होंने एक रसोइये को चुना, जो भारत की पहली ‘फीचर फ़िल्म’ की पहली हिरोइन बन रहा था, उसका नाम था ‘सालुंके’।
Raja Harishchandra – India’s First Full-Length Feature Film
In 1913, Phalke made history by directing Raja Harishchandra, India’s first full-length silent feature film. Despite facing technical limitations, financial struggles, and social resistance, Phalke’s determination led to the birth of a cinematic movement that would evolve into one of the world’s largest film industries. Over the span of his career, Dadasaheb Phalke directed and produced more than 95 feature-length films and 26 short films between 1913 and 1937. His works drew inspiration from Indian mythology, folklore, and epics, notably the Mahabharata and Ramayana, thereby ensuring that Indian cultural identity remained central to his cinematic efforts.He was not only a filmmaker but also a trailblazer in technical innovation — mastering cinematography, editing, set design, and even special effects at a time when no formal film schools or institutions existed in India.
