India’s summer arrived early, and a Super El Nino is brewing.

Heat waves have hit 11 states. Infact Banda, in UP, touched 47.4°C. And forecasters say a possible Super El Nino could stretch the heat through 2026.

The India Meteorological Department flagged heat-wave conditions in 11 states and union territories, including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

With temperatures rising, particularly in regions experiencing heatwaves, it is crucial to take precautions against severe health risks. Authorities advise staying hydrated, avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours, and monitoring for symptoms of heat exhaustion. An advisory has also been issued by the government to protect workers and labourers from the adverse effects of rising temperature and heat wave and to implement safety measures for workers.

Stay indoors, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM….when it’s the peak hours of hot temperature …tune in to Akashvani and listen to all the beautiful melodies and updates on what’s going on around you. Now, it’s time for our segment Dateline India, in which we take a look at the developments taking place at the national or global level. Today, we will talk about:

DATELINE 1- INDIA NEW ZEALAND FREE TRADE AGREEMENT

Today we’re talking about a single agreement that could quietly unlock doors for millions of Indians- including farmers, small business owners, artisans, even young entrepreneurs dreaming big! That sounds powerful, right? But the real question is- What does that actually look like in real life?

I guess that’s Opportunity. Access. And a global stage.

Absolutely- Because- For the first time, 100% of Indian exports to New Zealand will face zero duty. Yes, you heard it right- zero. So when Indian goods travel across oceans, they don’t carry extra cost burdens anymore.

One change… and massive ripple effect. But- there’s more to it. This agreement isn’t just about trade numbers. It brings a 20 billion US Dollar investment commitment over the next 15 years. That kind of investment- builds industries. Creates jobs. Strengthens India’s global presence. Let’s hear it from Mr. Piyush Goyal himself-

What about our farmers? Well! India has carefully protected its key interests in dairy and agriculture. At the same time, through an Agricultural Productivity Partnership, farmers will get opportunities to improve productivity and connect to global value chains.

Indeed. Lower barriers mean more exports. More exports mean more demand. More demand means more jobs. It’s a full circle of growth.

So when the world looks toward Ayurveda or Indian wellness practices- India isn’t just participating. India is leading.

This isn’t only about trade agreements. It’s about every Indian dream getting a little closer to the world. Today we can proudly say that India is not waiting for opportunities anymore. India is actually creating them.

DATELINE 2- SIKKHIM’S 50th Year of Statehood

He also announced six cricket academies for the Northeast region. He launched the projects at the closing ceremony of the Sikkim’s 50th Year of Statehood celebrations. And standing right there, addressing the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi- called Sikkim as- The heaven of the East. The government has placed top priority on connectivity and infrastructure in Sikkim.

Development doesn’t stay on paper- it reaches people. And that’s exactly what 4,000 crore rupees worth of projects aim to do. A family from Delhi planning a peaceful vacation. They decide to go to Sikkim.

But Sikkim isn’t only about tourism. It has quietly achieved something extraordinary- It became a leader in organic and natural farming. In a world worried about chemicals and health- organic farming represent- Trust. Purity and Sustainability. let’s hear it out from our Prime Minister MODI-

Have you noticed how talent from the Northeast is shining everywhere? From football grounds to national arenas- young athletes from Sikkim are stepping forward.

And then came a moment that truly captured India’s soul. A grand performance- “1000 Steps of Unity”- with over 1,500 artists. Different cultures, different rhythms, but one spirit. It reflected the essence of

Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.

With ongoing and upcoming projects, that potential is now turning into reality. Earlier today, Prime Minister Modi even played football with local youth and visited the Orchidarium at Ridge Park. Not as a formal leader- but as someone connecting with people, their passions, their everyday life.

Kerala is once again in grief. More than a dozen people were killed in an explosion at a fireworks facility linked to famed Thrissur Pooram. A report:

On April 21st, a tragic firecracker explosion at Mundathikode near Thrissur claimed around 14 lives… and left many others injured. What began as a celebration quickly turned into panic, flames, and heartbreaking loss. Such incidents are not new to Kerala. We still remember the Kollam Puttingal temple tragedy of 2016… where over a hundred people lost their lives in a fireworks disaster. Even during Thrissur Pooram, minor and major fire-related mishaps have been reported over the years. Each time, safety concerns are raised… investigations follow… and regulations are promised. Yet, history seems to repeat itself.

This raises a serious question…

Are fireworks truly essential for our festivals?

Across temples, churches, and mosques… fireworks have become symbols of celebration. But when they repeatedly lead to loss of life, it is time to rethink their place in our traditions.

And beyond fireworks, there is another concern.

Elephant processions — a familiar and admired part of Kerala festivals. But behind the grandeur lies a different reality. Elephants are made to walk long distances… stand for hours under the harsh summer sun… and endure loud noise and crowds.

There have been several incidents of elephants turning violent under stress… resulting in injuries and deaths. Festivals are meant to celebrate life, faith, and togetherness. They are indeed colourful… and deeply rooted in our culture. But the suffering and risks associated with them cannot be ignored.

The Mundathikode tragedy is yet another reminder…

Safety cannot be secondary to spectacle.

Authorities may bring in stricter rules. But real change must come from all of us.

Can we celebrate without endangering lives?

Can we preserve tradition while ensuring safety and compassion?

That is the question before Kerala today. Because true celebration should never come at the cost of human life… or silent suffering. ANIL CHANDRAN Fors Parikrama, Akashvani News Kozhikode.”

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy too completed his self-enumeration from his residence through the official census website, and called on all people of Telangana to actively take part in this important exercise. The self-enumeration process will continue until May 10th, followed by house-listing operations from May 11th to June 9th.

“Arunachal Preadesh Khonsa West MLA Chakat Aboh urged citizens to actively participate in the national census and give accurate data, saying that it is crucial for effective planning and inclusive development. The MLA made the appeal after completing her self-enumeration as part of preparations for Census 2027.  Residents have also been requested to cooperate with enumerators and supervisors during houselisting visits and share reference details if self-enumeration is already done. Earlier in Namsai district, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein completed his self-enumeration for Census 2027, setting an example for the public to participate in it. Namsai MLA Chau Zingnu Namchoom and ZPC Chau Sujana Namchoom also completed their self-enumeration, and encouraged citizens to actively engage in this important national exercise. In Ladakh, in a significant development reflecting both administrative efficiency and spiritual facilitation, the first caravan of Ladakhi pilgrims for Hajj 2026 was flagged off from Kharul today. We have more on this from our correspondent:

Additional Deputy Commissioner Kargil, Shabbir Hussain, along with Chairman Hajj Committee Ladakh, Mohd Ali Majaz, flagged off the caravan amid emotional scenes, prayers, and warm send-offs by family members and well-wishers. The first batch, comprising 144 pilgrims, will proceed via Srinagar and is scheduled to depart for Medina on April 30. In total, 325 pilgrims from Ladakh have been selected for the sacred journey this year. The subsequent batches will depart in phases, with the final group scheduled to leave on May 5. Speaking on the occasion, officials highlighted that after Ladakh attained the status of a Union Territory, people across the region have begun to experience tangible progress not only in development but also in spiritual facilitation. Strengthened infrastructure, improved connectivity, and focused governance have enhanced public services, while dedicated institutions like the Hajj Committee Ladakh are ensuring smoother and more organized arrangements for pilgrims. This positive transformation is reflected in the seamless coordination of Hajj 2026, where pilgrims from remote areas are now receiving better logistical support, guidance, and care. The efforts of the administration and the Hajj Committee have significantly eased the journey of the Hajis, enabling them to focus on their spiritual aspirations with greater comfort and dignity. Officials further stated that the growing synergy between development initiatives and spiritual services marks a new chapter for Ladakh, where progress is not only measured in infrastructure but also in the well-being and faith of its people.

The district administration has made adequate arrangements to ensure safe and hassle-free movement of all pilgrims. For parikarma this is Anayat Ali from Kargil UT Ladakh.

Business News;

Benchmark domestic equity indices fell around half a per cent today. The Sensex slipped 417 points to close at 76 thousand and 887, while the Nifty dipped 97 points to settle at 23 thousand and 996. However, the broader market indices on the National Stock Exchange ended in the green. The Midcap 100 added 0.3 per cent, while the Small cap 100 rose 0.4 per cent.

Earlier, the market opened on a tepid note, tracking mixed trends in global equities. The Sensex and Nifty turned positive for a while, but lost momentum during afternoon trade and ended lower amid the monthly expiry of Nifty futures and options contracts. Elevated crude oil prices and ongoing geopolitical uncertainties also weighed on the market. In the Indian bullion market, 24-Carat gold was trading down at 1 lakh 50 thousand 127 rupees per 10 grams, while silver was also trading down at 2 lakh 38 thousand 339 rupees per kilogram, when reports last came in.
