Promoting the spirit of “Atithi Devo Bhava,” Assam University has opened its doors to a youth delegation from central India. The ten day long ‘Ashtalakshmi Darshan’ programme in Silchar, aims to bridge the cultural gap between the Northeast and the rest of the country.
“The youth delegation has 44 members. It includes 20 students from Rajasthan’s universities and 20 from Madhya Pradesh’s universities. Two coordinators from each state lead the group. The North Eastern Council and Assam University jointly organize this initiative. The purpose of the program is to get the outside students knowing the unique culture and heritage of Northeast India. At the formal welcome in the university guest house, Vice-Chancellor Professor Rajive Mohan Pant explained the term ‘Ashtalakshmi’ to the visitors . It represents the eight northeastern states. He called them the pillars of India’s prosperity. Several distinguished speakers addressed the event. Geoscientist Trilochan Singh shared stories of his travels through the Northeast in the 1970s. Programme nodal officer Prof M. Gangabhushan noted that students must experience grassroots realities. Only then can they truly understand the local way of life. The delegation spent the last ten days immersed in activities across the region. They visited different places in Dima Hasao, Mizoram and Barak Valley from their camp at Assam University.
