Now, it’s time for our segment Dateline India, in which we take a look at the developments taking place at the national or global level. Today, we will talk about WORLD CONSUMER RIGHTS DAY.

Have you ever paused for a second and thought about this…From the morning cup of chai…to booking a cab…to ordering groceries online late at night…What is the one thing connecting all of us?

Every single consumer has powerful rights- rights that ensure fairness, transparency, and protection in the marketplace.

But why March 15? Because on this very day in 1962, consumer rights were formally recognized at the global level when the idea of protecting consumers was brought into the spotlight.

If that has ever happened to you… you’re not alone. These situations are exactly why strong consumer protection systems are essential. And India is actively strengthening these protections.

For example, online marketplaces must clearly disclose- product details, price breakdown, seller information, country of origin, return and refund policies. All of this ensures that consumers know exactly what they are paying for.

This means that the digital marketplace is becoming more transparent, accountable, and consumer-friendly. Let’s suppose you order a smartphone online. Earlier, you might have seen a low price initially… but during checkout, extra fees suddenly appeared.

India’s consumer protection journey has come a long way. From awareness campaigns like “Jago Grahak Jago” to digital complaint platforms and stronger laws…the country is building a system where every consumer has a voice.

The next time you buy something… whether it’s a packet of biscuits from a neighborhood store or a gadget from an online marketplace…. Ask yourself:

Do I know my rights as a consumer?

Because when consumers are informed… markets become fairer, businesses become more responsible, and the entire nation moves forward with confidence.

And that is the spirit of World Consumer Rights Day.

Because we all buy things in our daily lives- from groceries and clothes to gadgets and online orders- that automatically makes each one of us a consumer.  Since we are all part of the consumer club, today is a special day for each one of us.

Because a smart consumer doesn’t just buy…they compare, question, verify, and then decide wisely. So, we wish you a happy World Consumer Rights Day!

The Andhra Pradesh government has introduced a new initiative to bring the traditional food culture of tribal communities into the mainstream through a millet-based menu titled “Araku Kouni”. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu launched the menu during the sixth Collectors’ Conference held at the Secretariat in Velagapudi on March 12.

The “Araku Kouni” menu draws inspiration from the indigenous food traditions of tribal communities in Araku Valley, located in Alluri Sitarama Raju district. Known for its rich tribal culture and natural farming practices, the region produces a variety of millets cultivated without chemical fertilisers or pesticides. Araku Kouni” presents a range of traditional millet-based dishes that have been part of the daily diet of tribal families for generations. The menu includes Korra Payasam made from foxtail millet, Ragi Chapati prepared with finger millet, Samala Pulihora using little millet, Kantla Ambali, a nutritious porridge made from bajra, along with Corn Vada and Toor Dal Curry. These recipes were sourced directly from local tribal communities and adapted for wider consumption while retaining their original flavour and nutritional value. The initiative was led by the district administration with the support of tribal anganwadi workers, the Indian Culinary Institute in Tirupati and the State Tourism Department. Experts documented the recipes along with their nutritional content, calorific values and health benefits. The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation plans to introduce the Araku Kouni menu at Haritha restaurants across the district and gradually expand it to other tourism centres in the state. Officials say the effort is expected to promote millet consumption, highlight the culinary traditions of tribal communities and create new market opportunities for farmers cultivating traditional millets in the Araku region.

Amid concerns over supply disruptions triggered by the West Asia crisis, researchers at CSIR- National Chemical Laboratory Pune have derived that dimethyl ether (DME) is a potential indigenous alternative to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), particularly for domestic cooking fuel. The researchers have developed a patent-protected DME production technology using an indigenously developed catalyst that enables efficient conversion of methanol to DME. More from our Pune Correspondent…

CSIR NCL, in partnership with a processing engineering collaborator, is prepared to advance the technology to an industrial-scale demonstration facility capable of processing 2.5 tonnes per day within a timeframe of 6 to 9 months. This innovation facilitates the effective conversion of methanol into DME and has the potential to significantly enhance India’s energy security. As reported by CSIR-NCL, the recently created process employs a locally sourced catalyst that aids in the transformation of methanol into DME under relatively moderate operating conditions. Crucially, this technology generates DME at approximately 10 bar pressure, enabling it to be directly filled into standard LPG cylinders. This alignment with current LPG infrastructure greatly enhances the fuel’s practicality. Researchers have successfully showcased the technology at a pilot scale of 250 kg per day, underscoring its preparedness for subsequent industrial implementation. Dimethyl ether burns much more cleanly compared to traditional fuels. Researchers indicate that DME produces minimal amounts of soot, nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), and particulate matter. Additionally, its thermal efficiency is on par with that of conventional fuels, rendering it appropriate for both domestic cooking and industrial heating purposes. If the demonstration unit proves successful, it could lead to the establishment of commercial-scale facilities with capacities between 100 and 500 tonnes per day. At present, India imports over 80% of its fossil energy needs, thus exposing the nation to risks from geopolitical instability and fluctuations in global prices. In this context, DME presents a clean-burning synthetic fuel alternative that can either supplement or partially substitute LPG, thus decreasing dependence on imports. For Parikrama, Manoj Kshirsagar, Pune.
