Renowned Urdu poet and literary figure Bashir Badr passed away at the age of 91 in Bhopal today. According to his family, he breathed his last at around noon. Bashir Badr had been suffering from dementia for a long time. He was laid to rest at a cemetery near Bhopal Talkies this evening. Here is a tribute:

Ujaale apni yaadon ke hamaare saath rehne do, Na jaane kis gali mein zindagi ki shaam ho jaaye; Mohabbaton mein dikhaave ki dosti na mila, Agar gale nahin milta to haath bhi na mila.

These timeless lines capture the soul of Bashir Badr’s poetry — simple yet deeply moving, intimate yet universal. His ghazals spoke of love, loneliness, relationships, separation, and the quiet emotions hidden within everyday life. Bashir Badr gave Urdu poetry a fresh identity by writing in a language that felt close to ordinary people. His couplets continue to echo in mushairas and conversations. In 1999, Bashir Badr received the Padma Shri and Sahitya Akademi Award for his poetry collection “Aas”.

Bashir Badr was born on 15 February 1935 in Ayodhya. He completed his post-graduation from Aligarh Muslim University. He joined Meerut College as a lecturer in the Urdu department and taught there until 1990.
