The Bombay High Court today directed Meta, X Corp and Google LLC to immediately remove abusive, obscene and defamatory social media posts targeting Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari.
The court granted interim relief in a civil defamation suit filed by the minister over AI-generated deepfake videos and manipulated posts falsely alleging that he and his family benefited financially from the ethanol-blended petrol programme.
The court also asked online platforms to develop mechanisms to promptly detect and remove such content without requiring victims to approach the courts. The court also directed the platforms to promptly act on any similar posts reported in future. The matter has been posted for further hearing after four weeks.
