The Bombay High Court today granted permission to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari to file a civil suit against Meta Platforms, X Corp, Google LLC, and other unidentified persons over the alleged circulation of defamatory deepfake and AI-generated content online. The court allowed the Minister to file the suit after accepting submissions that the allegedly defamatory content was accessible to users in Maharashtra, giving the High Court jurisdiction to hear the matter.
Mr Gadkari has alleged that the AI-generated posts falsely linked him and his family to financial gains from the ethanol-blended fuel programme, describing the claims as malicious and defamatory. Through the suit, Mr Gadkari has sought permanent injunctions to restrain the circulation of such content.
