BJP terms SC’s verdict on Section 6A of Citizenship Act as historic

BJP has termed the Supreme Court’s verdict on the constitutional validity of Section 6(A) of the Citizenship Act as historic. Talking to media, BJP Spokesperson, Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the law was challenged by various groups but the Constitutional bench of the Supreme Court today has given recognition to this. Speaking about the provision, Mr Prasad pointed out that it was added to the Indian Citizenship Act of 1955 in the wake of the Assam Accord during former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s administration. He highlighted that the necessity for this provision arose after student protests against illegal migration in Assam. He mentioned that as per the core of this provision, those who entered Assam till 1966, will be treated as citizens of India while those who arrived between 1966 and 1971 shall be subject to compliance with the rules required.
