Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President Nitin Nabin today said that Partition Horrors Remembrance Day is an occasion to remember those who sacrificed their lives, lost their loved ones and were forced to migrate during the Partition.
Addressing an event on Partition Horrors Remembrance Day in Gurugram, Haryana, Mr. Nabin paid homage to all those families who lost their loved ones and suffered the pain of displacement. He noted that when the Two-Nation Theory was discussed in the Lahore Resolution in 1940, people realised that India’s freedom could come with the painful price of Partition.
Mr Nabin said that on 16 August 1946, a sad chapter unfolded on the streets of Calcutta on Direct Action Day, plunging the entire country into communal violence. During that period, lakhs of people were forced to migrate from one place to another in search of safety, leaving behind their lifelong savings. He said, more than 1.5 crore people were displaced and millions lost their lives.
Mr Nabin further said that when Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided to observe the Partition tragedy as Remembrance Day, he urged the nation to remember that dark chapter in history. He also recalled Mahatma Gandhi’s march in Calcutta, where many people were displaced and lost their lives. He said, people from Rawalpindi to various areas of Punjab faced violent incidents. The BJP President said that the younger generation must know the tragedy of Partition.
