BJP has defended the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2026, amid protests by the opposition BJD and Congress in the Odisha Assembly. BJP leader Peeyush Mohanty, speaking to media persons in Bhubaneswar today, cited the Justice MB Shah Commission’s report on illegal mining, which had estimated losses of more than 59,000 crore rupees from illegal iron ore and manganese mining in Odisha.

The BJP leader said the amended law will bring greater uniformity and predictability to mining taxation and protect Odisha’s industrial and economic interests. The Opposition, however, has demanded the withdrawal of the amendments, claiming they will affect the State’s fiscal powers and mineral revenue. The issue has disrupted Assembly proceedings for several days.
