The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has revised hallmarking charges for gold and silver articles. The hallmarking fee for gold has been increased from 45 to 75 rupees per article, while the charge for silver remains unchanged at 35 rupees per article. The revised charges will come into effect immediately, ahead of the festive season.
The increase in gold hallmarking charges has been notified through the BIS (Hallmarking) Amendment Regulations, 2026, dated 14th of this month.
Under the amended Schedule IV, jewellers will have to pay a hallmarking fee of 75 rupees per gold article, subject to a minimum charge of 200 rupees per consignment. For silver articles, the fee payable by jewellers to recognised Assaying and Hallmarking Centres (AHCs) remains 35 rupees per article, with a minimum charge of 150 rupees per consignment.
BIS hallmarking verifies the purity of precious metals used in jewellery and certifies the article under the Bureau of Indian Standards. A hallmarked article carries three key markings: the BIS logo, the Karat fineness, and a six-digit alphanumeric Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number.
