The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has expanded the Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID)-based silver hallmarking ecosystem with 341 silver Assaying and Hallmarking Centres (AHCs) across 102 districts, and more than 25,000 silver jewellers are registered with BIS ahead of the festive season. The BIS informed that since the launch of the Silver HUID portal on 1 September last year, over 77 lakh silver jewellery pieces have already been hallmarked with HUID.

The six-digit HUID under the Hallmarking System Assures Traceability of Silver Jewellery and Artefacts. The BIS advised consumers purchasing silver jewellery to look for the BIS hallmark and verify the HUID through the BIS CARE app. It also advised to purchase only hallmarked silver jewellery from BIS Registered Jewellers to be assured of its purity. Further, the BIS urged consumers to also obtain a proper invoice for the purchase of silver articles and retain it for future reference.
