Amid the threat of flooding in Bihar’s border districts following floods in Nepal, severe erosion along the Ganga in Bhagalpur has raised concern. In Shankarpur of Kharik block, the situation remains sensitive due to the strong current and pressure of the river.

 

Akashvani correspondent reports that severe erosion along the Ganga has washed away an old Durga temple, a Hanuman temple and around 500 metres of the Zamindari embankment in the Naugachhia block. People from the affected areas have been shifted to safer locations.

 

Teams of the Water Resources Department are working on a war footing to control the erosion. Senior officials and engineers are present at the site and are continuously monitoring the situation.

 

Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary said that the erosion has intensified due to an unexpected change in the course of the Ganga. He said all possible efforts are being made to check the erosion and the situation is being closely monitored.

 

Meanwhile, a rise in the water levels of major rivers has led to flooding at several places in Saran, Vaishali, Begusarai, Buxar, Jehanabad, Nawada and Aurangabad. The administration and the Water Resources Department are maintaining close vigil in vulnerable areas.
