The Government’s flagship initiative, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, has emerged as a nationwide movement promoting behavioural change and empowering the girl child across the country.
Launched in January 2015 to address the declining Child Sex Ratio and gender-based discrimination, the scheme continues to strengthen efforts towards ensuring the survival, protection and education of girls.
The Ministry of Women and Child Development added that the initiative has contributed to significant improvements in key gender indicators over the past decade.
Data from the Health Management Information System show that the national Sex Ratio at Birth has improved from 918 in 2014-15 to 929 in 2024-25, reflecting sustained efforts to prevent gender-biased sex selection and promote institutional deliveries.
In the education sector, girls’ participation has also witnessed notable progress.
Data from the Unified District Information System for Education indicate that girls enrollment at the secondary level has increased from 75.51 per cent in 2014-15 to 80.2 percent in 2024-25, pointing to better retention and transition rates in schools.
The Ministry further said that the scheme continues to focus on community engagement, awareness generation and convergence among Ministries and States to create an enabling environment for girls.
