State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiyun Kobir said Bangladesh wants to move towards a new relationship with India through bilateral discussions rather than multilateral forums.

 

Speaking to reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka, Mr. Kobir said Bangladesh needs to move beyond what he described as an excessive preoccupation with India and deal with New Delhi on the basis of mutual interests. He added that Bangladesh would continue meeting other countries on the sidelines of regional and international forums whenever necessary.

 

On recent incidents along the Bangladesh-India border, Mr. Kobir said Dhaka would seek to resolve the issues through diplomatic discussions, while adhering to international law, existing border protocols and bilateral agreements.

 

Regarding reports of a review of 101 memorandums of understanding, he said the agreements are being scrutinised through the parliamentary process.
