Bangladesh garment workers continue to protest for second day

Garment workers’ demonstrations continued for the second consecutive day in several industrial areas of Bangladesh, including Dhaka, Gazipur and Ashulia, demanding an increase in the minimum monthly wage, an end to blacklisting and the reinstatement of dismissed workers.

In Gazipur, hundreds of workers blocked several points of the Dhaka-Tangail highway, causing traffic congestion stretching many kilometres. The government deployed 10 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel alongside police and other law enforcement agencies to maintain order in the industrial areas.

In Ashulia, police fired tear gas and used water cannons to disperse protesting workers attempting to block highways. Demonstrations were also reported in Dhaka’s Mirpur area, where police stopped workers from marching towards Mirpur-10.

The unrest follows Sunday’s violent demonstrations, which witnessed clashes, vandalism and road blockades. At least 529 garment factories in several industrial areas had declared holidays amid the disturbances.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed held a meeting with garment industry representatives on Monday, warning that those involved in violence and sabotage would face strict action. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has also directed authorities to protect workers’ interests while ensuring uninterrupted production and exports.
