Atomic Energy Dept Secretary Dr Ajit Kumar Mohanty visits Tarapur Atomic Power Station in Maharashtra

Department of Atomic Energy Secretary Dr Ajit Kumar Mohanty today visited Tarapur Atomic Power Station (TAPS) in Maharashtra and reviewed the recently approved 10-year life extension of TAPS 1 and 2, the world’s oldest operating twin nuclear reactors.

The Department of Atomic Energy said the extension programme included comprehensive inspections, deployment of indigenous technologies for reactor integrity assessment, modernisation of electrical systems and measures to enhance long-term reliability and safety.

Dr Mohanty said the continued operation of the reactors reflects the dedication of generations of scientists, engineers and operators, as well as India’s growing technological and regulatory capabilities. He said the extension demonstrates the country’s progress towards technological self-reliance and supports the vision of an energy-independent Viksit Bharat. Commissioned in 1969, TAPS 1 and 2 were India’s first commercial nuclear power reactors and made Tarapur the first nuclear power station in Asia outside the Soviet bloc.
