Rescue operations have started after an under-construction godown collapsed, trapping workers beneath heavy iron debris near Taratala in Kolkata today. Three people were declared dead at the SSKM Hospital, and the injured are being treated there.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari reached the spot. State ministers Agnimitra Paul and Dr Indranil Kha also reached the accident site to assess the situation. Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police, fire and emergency services, and the Indian Army are engaged in search and rescue operations. Several workers are feared to be trapped beneath the debris. The state secretariat, Nabanna, has issued helpline numbers to assist those affected by the mishap.
Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal expressed grief over the collapse situated on land leased by Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port. In a social media post, Mr Sonowal said that rescue operations are currently in full swing and some individuals have been safely rescued. He noted that the port is actively providing necessary support to the state government, with all agencies and senior officials present on the ground.
