Assam today celebrated the 80th Independence Day with enthusiasm. At the state-level function held at Khanapara in Guwahati, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma hoisted the National Flag. The Chief Minister also took the salute of the Assam Police and paramilitary forces parade.
Addressing the people on the occasion, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a series of major welfare, infrastructure and governance initiatives by the state government. Highlighting the government’s long-term development roadmap under “Vision 2047”, the Chief Minister said Assam will invest ₹50,000 crore from its own resources over the next four years for roads, schools, urban development and rural infrastructure. He added that the state aims to secure an additional ₹1 lakh crore from the Central Government over the next five years, taking the total planned investment in capital infrastructure development to ₹1.5 lakh crore between 2026 and 2031.
The Chief Minister also assured extensive rehabilitation measures for the flood-affected districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat in the state. As part of the relief package, the state government will waive land revenue for one year and provide electricity tariff exemptions up to 300 units for the month of July in the four worst-hit districts.
Dr. Sarma also announced financial relief measures, including repayment moratoriums and tenure extensions for housing, education and vehicle loans. He said insurance claim settlements would be expedited to assist affected families.
The Chief Minister also announced the proposal to create eight new Co-Districts in the state. He noted that notifications had earlier been issued for 78 Co-Districts, of which 49 have already been inaugurated.
On the social front, Dr. Sarma directed Assam Police to launch a 30-day intensive campaign against child marriage beginning November 1. Referring to the state’s earlier crackdown launched in 2021, he said the initiative had contributed to a decline in child marriage cases and an increase in female enrolment in higher education.
