Assam: Borjuli Site in Sonitpur Notified as Biodiversity Heritage Site

The National Rainfed Area Authority-funded wild rice conservation project has achieved a major milestone in Assam. The Borjuli site in Sonitpur district has been notified as a Biodiversity Heritage Site by the National Biodiversity Authority under the project.

The project, titled In-situ Conservation and Management of Wild Rice (Oryza rufipogon) in Sonitpur District of Assam, aims to protect wild rice in its natural habitat. The recognition is an important step towards conserving India’s rich wild rice diversity and promoting climate-resilient agriculture.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare said the project has been under implementation since 2022. It is being carried out by the ICAR-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources, New Delhi, in collaboration with the Assam State Biodiversity Board.
