Assam Assembly: CM strongly defends police action against drug traffickers

Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma today strongly defended police using retaliatory force against drug traffickers. He said law enforcement must be allowed to take decisive action when faced with violent resistance. He said this while replying to a motion on a “Drug-Free Assam” moved by Congress MLA Jakir Hussain Sikdar on the second day of the Budget Session in the state Assembly in Dispur.
Highlighting the broader challenge of drug trafficking, the Chief Minister said investigations into drug supply chains often lead to the international border with Myanmar through transit routes in Mizoram and Manipur. He informed the House that the Union Government has initiated extensive measures to curb cross-border trafficking, with active cooperation from the concerned northeastern states. Dr. Sarma also emphasised the need to strengthen rehabilitation efforts for youth affected by substance abuse.
