The Andhra Pradesh Government has issued statutory rules for conducting ordinary elections to Urban Local Bodies in the State. The rules cover direct elections to Mayors, Chairpersons and Ward Members, besides indirect elections to Deputy Mayors and Vice-Chairpersons.
Under the amended laws, Mayors of Municipal Corporations and Chairpersons of Municipalities and Nagar Panchayats will be elected directly by voters. The directly elected Mayor or Chairperson will have a five-year term.
Separate rules have been issued for electing one Deputy Mayor in each Municipal Corporation and one Vice-Chairperson in each Municipality or Nagar Panchayat through indirect voting by eligible elected and ex-officio members.
The Government has also announced a 14-day exercise from September 8 to 21 for identification of SC, ST, BC and women voters in 59 Urban Local Bodies for reservation purposes.
In 41 ULBs, electoral rolls are expected to be published within a week following recent High Court orders on delimitation. Further action in 23 ULBs will be taken after the High Court passes orders on pending proceedings.
