Angh, directed by Naga filmmaker, wins Platform Prize 2026 at TIFF

In a historic first, Angh, directed by Naga filmmaker Theja Rio, has won the Platform Prize 2026 at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Angh was one of 12 films selected for this year’s platform programme, the TIFF’s only competitive section. Beginning with the 2026 prize, winning the TIFF Platform Prize gives a non-English-language film a direct pathway to eligibility for consideration for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. Announcing the award, Jury President Pablo Trapero praised Angh for its refreshing perspective, strength of filmmaking and deeply resonant portrait of a world.

The jury also commended Theja Rio for his vision, audacity and courage. In his acceptance speech, Theja Rio thanked the TIFF jury and said the recognition was truly special, as it highlights a film from an Indigenous region and in a tribal language. He said it meant a great deal to the team to represent their people and receive the award. He also thanked his family and friends for their unwavering support. Rio said he came from a small part of Northeast India, where, he noted, dreams do not often come true for his people. He dedicated the award to the people back home, saying that this is just the beginning. The Platform programme champions films with bold directorial vision and distinctive storytelling. The Platform Prize carries a cash award of 20,000 Canadian dollars and a trophy.

The Platform jury this year comprised Pablo Trapero, Amma Asante, Sylvia Chang, Luc Déry and Albert Lee. Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has congratulated Director Theja Rio and the team of ‘ANGH’ on winning the prestigious Platform Prize at the Toronto International Film Festival, TIFF. In a social media post, the Chief Minister said the historic win marks a proud moment for Nagaland and India, and carries a Naga debut onto the Oscar journey. He added that it is also a proud moment for the region and its storytellers on the global stage as ‘ANGH’ brings Naga cinema and its talent into the spotlight. Mr Rio extended his best wishes to the entire team for their journey ahead.
