In Punjab, the acting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj has directed the Punjab government to address all the objections raised by the Akal Takhat concerning the anti-sacrilege law within a month. This direction was passed by him, today at Amritsar, at the gathering of all Sikh MLAs and Cabinet ministers of the state who appeared before the Akal Takhat.
They were summoned by the Takhat on 15th of this month, to appear before it today for giving clarification on the anti-sacrilege law — Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026. The amendment was objected by the Sikh body, saying that it was enacted without consulting the Sikh Panth.
Later, speaking to the media, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said that the government will take the decision as per the directive of the Akal Takhat.
The Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill, 2026, was unanimously passed by the Punjab Assembly on April 13. It includes a provision for stricter punishment, including life imprisonment for any act of sacrilege against the Guru Granth Sahib.
