In Gujarat, Aam Aadmi Party MLA Chaitar Vasava may lose his Assembly membership following his conviction in an assault and extortion case. Gujarat Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Purnesh Modi said that a person sentenced to two years’ imprisonment cannot legally continue in office and is also barred from contesting elections for six years.

 

Chaitar Vasava, his wife Shakuntala Vasava and eight others were recently convicted by the Rajpipla Sessions Court in connection with a 2023 case involving the assault of forest department officials, extortion and offences under the Arms Act.
