Landslide in China’s Chongqing claims 8 lives

In China, eight people were killed and 34 others remain missing after a landslide in country’s southwestern city of Chongqing yesterday. According to the state media, rescue teams evacuated 10 people from the debris, including two persons with serious injuries. State broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) reported that the landslide occurred in Chongqing’s Pengshui County, when a massive flow of rocks and soil crashed down a hillside, burying more than 10 residential buildings. Authorities said the landslide was triggered by heavy rainfall near a section of the Wujiang River, which flows through the region’s karst mountains dotted with small towns and terraced landscapes. More than 8 hundred rescue personnel have been deployed to the site for search and rescue operations.
