7.5-magnitude earthquake strikes Venezuela, structures collapse in Caracas

In Venezuela, a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.5 hit Yumare town in the state of Yaracuy this morning. According to the US Geological Survey, this earthquake was the second event in a doublet. Earlier, an earthquake of magnitude 7.2 hit San Felipe in Venezuela, which was the first event in a doublet. This magnitude 7.2 foreshock was followed just 39 seconds later by a larger 7.5 mainshock. 
 
As per initial reports, multiple structures have collapsed in Caracas, Venezuela. The quake was strongly felt across a large part of Venezuelan territory, triggering alerts in the civil protection systems of the South American nation.
