World facing challenging time as global growth is slowing down, says India's G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant

India's G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant today said that the world is facing a challenging time as global growth is slowing down. Addressing a G20 Conference on Green Growth and Sustainable Growth Agenda for Global Growth Economy, which is organised by the NITI Aayog in New Delhi, Mr. Kant said the real challenge before the world is to accelerate growth as there is huge global debt, which is impacting around one-third of the world. He said that there are 75 countries that are currently facing debt crises. 

Mr Kant said that only 12 percent of SDGs are on track due to which 120 million people have gone below the poverty line. He added that the implementation of SDGs are needed to accelerate when the world is confronting such issues. He emphasised upon the need to build a resilient and inclusive global value chain for sustainable development.

BJP MP Jayant Sinha emphasised that net zero is net positive and termed it as important for multiple dimensions whether it be for GDP growth or job creation. Mr. Sinha said that India's annual import bill is 600 billion dollars, out of which 250 billion dollars are on fossil fuels, like crude oil, Natural gas and other products.

Niti Aayog CEO B.V.R Subrahanyam said that green and sustainable growth is no longer a choice but a necessity for India. He said that the diverse congregation of experts will provide an opportunity to undertake a deep dive on major areas relating to sustainable growth. He added that the key takeaways will be taken up by the NITI Aayog and its partners in multiple forums for further discussion. The aim of the conference is also to present key take away and recommendations to fees into the G20 Communique ahead of the Ministerial meeting in September 2023.
