World Cotton Day is being celebrated across the globe today. Every year on the 7th of October, the day is observed to recognise the importance of cotton as a global commodity and to promote awareness about the challenges faced by cotton farmers and the cotton industry worldwide.
While cotton is mainly used in the textile industry, it is also important for animal feed, medical supplies, and making edible oil.
Currently, India is the second-largest cotton producer in the world, after China.
