In West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today held a meeting with Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) chief Anit Thapa over the phone to review the situation in the hills, hit by natural calamities.
The Chief Minister assured the GTA chief that the state government is reviewing the damage caused to the hills due to the natural calamities. Concerned about the situation in the hills, the Chief Minister has decided to send a special team to the hills to look into the situation. GTA chief held a meeting with Chief Secretary Harikrishna Dwivedi in the state secretariat Nabanna this morning.
Incidentally, there are reports that at least 300 houses have been damaged in Kalimpong due to the overflow of the river Teesta. The extent of the damage will be clear when the BDOs visit all parts of the district. Bengal-Sikkim Life Line, No. 10 national highway is under the influence of the collapse. It will take at least 10 days to rebuild the road.
On the other hand, due to fresh disaster in the hills of Sikkim, there is a threat of disaster in the Teesta region. After receiving the warnings, announcements have started on the bank of Teesta River in Jalpaiguri. Flood shelter has been opened and residents have been advised to move to a safe place.
